When to upgrade clubs?

Just wondering when and why people upgrade their clubs. Do you wait till you are at a stage in your game when you havent improved for a while or change regulary to keep up with technology. I am new to the game and just bought a relatively cheap set and have vowed not to upgrade until I crack 90. Currently around 110. My reasoning is If I cant get to 90 with my current clubs it is me and newer , better equipment is not going to make much difference.

I’ve just upgraded clubs recently for a couple of reasons. 1. To get clubs that are fitted for me just not the stock off the shelve set. I don’t think i would improve my swing much with the wrong spec clubs. Especially considering i was starting to play a lot more frequently. 2. The set i had were cheap and very inconsistant. By that i mean i would feel like i flush it and it could vary upto 30m between the shots. (yes i was using the same club)

upgrade every time there is a new model of the club you use….they are newer and therefore better, otherwise you will fall behind

I tend to disagree
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |

Bought my last set of irons when on 18 hcp. Kept them for 12-14 months . Got to 11 hcp. Then upgraded to my MAcgregors. havent done any strokes but feel like they are a much better club to hit. Easier to control ball flight. Starting to hit more greens especially par 3’s….........Usually upgrade wedges the most. Had current driver for a while and starting to get itchy feet.

Interesting to see peoples different views on when too up grade clubs, perhaps someone could answer me this. I currently still use the clubs that I had fitted when I started golf and was off a 27 handicap, my handicap is now 12. So should I be upgrading, I know my swing has changed since I started but am unsure what else would have changed (lie angles etc etc). Any Thoughts? Sorry GottaStartSomewhere if i’ve hijacked your thread.

I have had more drivers in my life than i have had shags….says something about my love of the game..anyways lets move on… :) I have only had 3 sets of irons in my life….Im 38 and started golf in 1987…had a set of tom watsons for ages, then wilson pi5’s and recently upgraded to srixon 1-506’s had more putters than Amelda Marcos had shoes :)
so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead |

You know its time to upgrade your/change your clubs when you stand over the ball and it doesn’t feel right anymore.

hmm…yes and no..I was hitting my old irons ok….I justed a different ball flight…lower I sold my wilson pi5s to amate and was actually a bit emtional seeing them go I think you have to look at what the golf ball is doing not how they look at adress

dave-1 ….sorry its a bit of topic but what are your impressions of the 506s

cobra i had the 506 since new and now use the i-701 tour and they are a great iron i gave them to a mate and they were still like new as i cleaned them after every game and kept iron covers on them as well , i find i can work the ball better with the i-701 tour but the 506 were good enough for me not to lose a pennant match and win the gold medal championship in 2006 .

I have had the same set of Trident Calais for around 12 years, I purchased a new set so I have some when I go home on holidays however the Tridents are over here with me and still working fine. I thought it was time to upgrade as they just didn’t feel good however with a small change in swing we are talking again. I generally hit 1 to 2 clubs shorter than most people I play with so distance isn’t a problem with the old girls. I think I will upgrade the clubs again when I am ready to learn how to work the ball. ATM I try to hit streight and long with the occasional intentional slice which means any basic set will do.

It’s only been since coming back to golf in the last 18 months (after a 10 years lay off) I’ve started to upgrade certain golf clubs. I suppose it’s the ebay presence and the strong Aussie dollar, hence cheaper prices and far more choice…none of these factors were there 10 years ago. Initially I had to update my old equipment to the modern stuff. It was far easier in the “good ole days”. You just brought a driver and no bastard could hit it in the air other than Greg Norman! Sort of a level playing field for us hackers, and a OEM’s marketing nightmare! Anyway, things change, now there are so many choices, launch monitors etc….it took some time to work it all out! Although I’ve changed quite a few drivers and putters, I’m still using my 16 year old Cobra irons. They’re the right length and lie and the smaller heads help with trajectory.

Getting properly fitted for clubs is a great idea at any stage. Get a few lessons with your clubfitter, they can asses your action, point you in the right direction and start playing with shafts etc to fit you up. If you can get hold of someone who really knows what they are doing the right shaft can transform your ball flight dramatically. I used to hit really low shots, now (granted with working on my action also) I hit the ball nice and high and when it comes out of the screws, long. It will give you confidence too, you’ll know the gear is right, so it’s all up to you!!! Hope this helps, Foxy

Is driver technology really going anywhere useful at the moment? I’m playing a TM R510 which is definitely long in the tooth now, but we understand each other… not sure why I would want to have to start up again with another stick. I’m on the verge of buying a new set of irons (MP57s) – like Kiwi I think my game has improved to the point where I can benefit from a better iron.

I play in windy conditions, so wanted lower ball flight, tested them well before I bought a set Loved them so far..had them for 3 weeks…shot 80 (im off 11) the first round I played with them Love the 4 and 5 iron…they are pretty forgiving also. Can really work the ball also. Couldnt be happier, they feel like butter, yes I knoiw most forged irons do feel the same but they are good even when you dont quite middle it
so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead |

thats good news….yeah do the same clean them after every round, and head covers… Im very meticulous about my gear

every time you have a bad round the answer can usually be found with a new wedge driver or putter lol!
