We’re playing in an Ambrose charity day this week. Have played ambrose a few times and enjoy it, but this time we’re out to win and not be also rans. Any tactical tips or experiences you’ve had would be appreciated.

this is how we play. straightest hitter tees off first and tries to hit fairway. longest hitter goes last and if someone has hit the fairway gives it everything. worst putter putts first and just tries to lag it next to the hole so the next 2 can go for it. last putter should be the best putter as he can study the right line.
|
|
First hitters try and be conservative – get the ball on the fairway or anywhere on the green first, then the next three hitters can get more aggressive with length or aiming at the pin. If the first couple of guys hit slices or hooks there is more pressure on the next two. And have your best putters go last. Your dodgy putters need to hit reasonable pace putts on a reasonable line to show everyone else where the break is. But hey, if it’s for charity, just try and enjoy the day, play with the right spirit and you might get a win as well. But you need lots of birdies and no bogies to win, and that takes a bit of luck to pull off.

Hard t6o win at Ambrose 4s Club golfers will tell you there are some awesome 27 handicappers out there that like playing Ambrose
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.
:( |

Yep, you definitely need a high handicapper or two in your group, they will hit some good shots which you can use, and a few putts as well, but without them you won’t be competitive in nett score.

The best way to win ambrose is a little dodgy. You want to put together a group of people that are high handycappers because they lack in one area. Ie. If you have all four guys off 20 but two of them are fantastic drivers/long iron players but 3 put every hole and two guys that can’t hit a driver to save their lives but are great around the greens and on the putter then you’re setup for success.

Only one way to win an Ambrose if your not playing with a club ….. you have to be bigger burglars than the rest, especially in charity days. Either that or put really well rounded team. Single capper, followed by a low teens and then some mid twenties. Any handicap above 7 is a bonus if you have one gun in the side. Besides that, it’s for charity, enjoy the walk, the ales, the company and think about where your $$$’s are going and who they will help.

only way to win is magic pencil unless your card is being marked by other than your group. all ambrose have turned into a farce lately . played in 1 recently & we chipped in twice & made an eagle as well but still lost gross by 9 shots!!!! we busted our arses, no bogies… there is no way we are that shit.
out of the sin bin & loving it! |
|
ditto ditto … yep hard to say but the pencil plays a big part .. to really win at ambrose is to have a fun guilt free day ..it can be lots of fun so do not let trying to win spoil it

I am part of this quartet, and as Batta says it would be nice to win. Obviously our primary focus is to have a great day (27 forecast, so should be bang on) Our team consists of a 15 h/c 18, 24 and 36. We can all play a bit some more than others, and as some of the posters have said doing things in order of competence is probably a great idea.
Right, lets fire up the Quatro |

If your all good mates, have a really good day because days like that are short in supply(Do not let a good shot go unpunished) Sledge hard and don’t get the shits when refused service at the clubhouse after drinking copius amounts of beer on the course:....:I did !!
You don't hit anything on your back swing so why rush
it!!!! |

Play with 3 bandits.

11.5/8th handicap, not bad. Hope you enjoy the round, because unless you can scratch together another 8+ birdies, with no boges of course, your in for a disappointing day if you expect to win. Watch everybodys jaw drop and the howls begin, when the scratch score is revealed at 11under but nett is 20+ under. Especially, when you go, “Hey, we played behind them and they weren’t going that well. The hoops and hollers on the green when a group gets a bogey, but Mr Magic Pen records a birdie are a real treat. Bit of luck, you will have a totally honest field, but unless this is an organised comp day (and even then it’s doubtful) not likely. For what was meant to be one of the quickest forms of golf, I’ll bet you take up to an hour longer to complete your round. Ambrose …...bah humbug.

It’s the handicap that kills of most, I know a club where one group has dominated for so many years it’s, well, any way each ambrose the team trots out a husband and wife combination both the men are around 14 hc and the ladies are both on 45.

just enjoy yourself have a bit of fun and a few beers. Don’t even think of winning. 4 person Ambrose is a blot on the game of Golf, which prides itself on etiquette, rules and fair play. No competitor as marker. I have played in a few and cant believe the scores that come in. Charity day! make sure your wallets full!

As predicted by several of you we didnt win, DID have a superb day though, shame it wasnt a calorie eating comp, we would have pissed it. For those that are interested the winning score was 57 gross (-15) from memory that was a net 51. We all played well (didnt cheat) and recorded a gross 68 which we were all pleased with. Bogeyed 2 of our first 5, which was a shame, but then birdied 6 of the rest. Worst score was a 91 gross, god knows what they were doing!

I played in a charity day a while ago where handicap was worked out on four secret holes. With three of us having h’caps and the fourth not (27) we should have had a cap of 9 or so. Can’t remember scores but I went into the presentations thinking we would have pssed it in, but must have birdied the secret holes, and got bugger all handicap. Still got closest 2nd shot though and had a great day, but yeah ambrose sucks as a game. It was for Juvenile diabetes, and a 7 yr old girl spoke at presentations about what she has to do every day. Wow, what a strong kid. The parents must be so proud of their kids and the way they do what they have to do, and smile as well.

Worst score was a 91 gross, god knows what they were doing! Playing for the Bradmans??? some great prizes handed out and its no more embarrassing then coming first!!

Our team came second in a charity ambrose event at Sandhurst on Good Friday – handicaps of 12,14,16,18. Our key was lots of alcohol and fun! :)

I play (mostly) at a small club but we have a number of sponsored events throughout the year. We have had to ban 4 man ( person ) Ambrose competitions, where there are good prizes, as the bandits come down from the hills.
