membership at the gold coast

Hi people. I’m just about to move to the gold coast from brisbane. I’ve not held a handicap for nearly 10 years and I’m playing again. I’m looking to find a course on the GC that is reasonably priced to join (read: cheap). I’m not too concerned for mega quality, just looking to maintain a handicap. close to coomera/hope island would be good. any input you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated

I too am a member of GGCG. Only join if you are happy with:

  • Can only book comp rounds a fortnight ahead
  • Can only book by showing up at the bar on Friday at 5pm to put your name on the time sheet for 2 weeks time.
  • Can only put you name on the time sheet at 5 pm if you show up in person at 4:30 pm to go into the draw to determine the order in which you get to choose a time.
  • Can tolerate a 6 hour stroke round on a Saturday

I’m giving you this information because when I signed up, my response to the question “is it easy to book for Saturday comps?’ was “yeah mate, no worries”.

I have played one round there. Teed off at 11:42 am. Had to leave the course at 5:30 pm to get ready to go out and we still had 3 holes to play.

No marshall sighted during round.

I will not be back.

Shit, what an anal way to do it.

thank you. could you suggest somewhere else though?

obviously an unhappy camper is GCM…..........
if you wany to play in a regular group of four it can be a little tricky with friday avo sheet.
i have been a member for two years & put my name on the sheet any time i want leading up to saturday & have missed a game i think once in 2 years. alternatively you can usually turn up saturday & get a game within 20-40mins.
playiong time has varied from 4.5 – 5.5hrs for sat comp depending on format, monthly medals are generally worst. played summer cup last 2 saturdays (blue tees) at 10.30 (4.5hrs) & 6.50 (4.75hrs)

as i previously said damn good value for money course in my opinion & i always see amarshall in saturday comps…................

relax & enjoy, it's just a game.......

11.2 to 9.6 to ..........

thanks guys all input is greatly appreciated. i might try to play a round or two before i decide. again, if anyone has another course suggestion i’d be interested to hear

Parkwood International which is probably 7 to 10 min from Gold Coast Country Club is great value for money.

Its about one thousand dollars a year.no joining fee. great members and staff are always avaiable to help.

good driving range.always in good nick.
pretty good 7 days a week except tuesday when playing behind ladies and vets comp. but it will only be a 445 hour round!

thanks mate! like i said previously i really appreciate the advice

Helensvale and parkwood gc would you best bet mate.
both are awesome course, ive been at both clubs. they are god clubs to be members of.

Yes I was an unhappy camper. Mostly due to the fact that there was no disclosure about the booking process for Saturday comps.

5.5 hours even for monthly medal indicates that the field is too big, mismanaged or both. I play at the Colonial on Saturdays (where you can even ring and book inside a fortnight) and never take longer than 4.5 hours.

If your just looking to maintain a handicap, then perhaps consider a Mega membership at Colonial. About $130 per year, pay about half price when you play (about $55 including comp fees) and you get an AGU handicap. Same access to competitions as a full member, other than eligability for club championships. Cheap rates are also available at Robina Woods.

I like this arrangement as it doesn’t require me to play the same course week after week to get full value out of a membership.

Parkwood?

talking about slow rounds….waste of space that layout!

Better looking for something else.

I have not played them for a couple of years but Tweed Heads and Burleigh are nice courses to have a try of. It was a shame though when Tweed changed the grass on their greens many years ago. I totally agree with Advocate on Parkwood.

You are kidding yourself if you think you can make it without hard-work.

thanks for all the responses guys. I was supposed to play colonial yesterday for a work golf day, but instead i had to attend the biggest waste of time meeting ever. disappointed. I like the look of tweed/coolangatta its a great looking course from the pictures i’ve seen and quite reasonably priced- i do like the sound of the colonial mega membership or even robina- what would the travel time be from coomera to tweed?

Once the Tugun By Pass opens it won’t take all that long.

Gribbles,

I drive to Colonial from Meadowbrook on Brisbane’s southside.

From Coomera you would be looking at about 25 minutes.

Also the mega membership gives you the same deal and access to comps on both Colonial and Robina Woods. Cost per game is about $10 more at Robina Woods.

Goods deals can be had a different time of the year if you play out of peak times. I always play early to get the better price and avoid the crowds.

is there any thing like the mega membership here in brisbane

Gribbles,
i am a member at Coolangatta Tweed Heads but also live on the Northen end of the coast, it might take me 30min to drive there but i think it is will worth the $850 a year i pay, 2 Course, one with bent greens and one with ( correct me if im wrong ) POA and both courses are always in great shape, Tee Plus which allows you to book your round via the internet and a great bunch of guys and facility’s. i thought about joining courses up around where i live but after playing there a number of time opted to join.

thanks gc swinger, thats more what i’m after. I really like the look of that track the more i see it. Do you know what the nom fees are and what the story is with applying for membership? like do you need to be sponsored by an existing member? Also a half hour drive rather than 15 minutes is well worth it for a good track.

Coolangatta-Tweed is far and away the best value on the Coast, maybe Queensland. Two great courses, though distance has neutered the back nine of the River somewhat, and 7 and 9 on the West are abominations, the rest of the holes are sensational. Always in good nick, and a good vibe.

After the Tugun bypass goes through, I’d imagine a 20 – 30 minute trip from Coomera, depending on traffic.

I played Hope over the weekend and found it to be an absolute pleasure. From what I can gather the membership is a bit expensive but as an all-round offering it is the best I have seen on the GC. The clubhouse is solid, the course is reliable and a very high standard in terms of conditioning and the practice facilities are among the best I have seen. The staff were attentive and the three members I enjoyed my various rounds with (one bloke 15, one bloke 30s, one bloke 50s) were all great golf people.. you know the type.. love the game, enjoy the challenge, enjoy being members and take pride in their club.

While the staff at Lakelands were attentive amd exceptional, especially the fellas in the proshop, the course is not in a condition that would have me rushing back there anytime soon..

If you keep an eye out on the Coolangatta – tweed website they often have a NO NOMINATION fee offer.

They do it about twice a year and its almost that time of the year again.

Coolangatta has two beautiful courses!

Eeek

you actually might want to ring up about it now, last newsletter it had the no nomination fee offer, so maybe give them a call and see if it still available.

I certainly don’t disagree that Hope Island is a far superior course, both architecturally and condition-wise. However I have a sneaking suspicion that membership costs may be slightly more than $875 per annum, hence my leaning towards C-TH.
