Portsea Golf Club

My club (Headland on the Sunshine Coast) has full reciprocal rights at Portsea. I would like to hear oppinions about this course. I am planning to play it in the middle of May.

Is it a good layout?
What are the greens like?
How severe is the rough?
Is it a links course?
What are the dress standards?

Well kept
Small elevated greens
Tea tree for rough
Not a real links course – a mix between a sand belt and links
Private course so normal golf attire is expected…

Great all year course.
Portsea can be tough when the southerly wind of Bass Strait blows. Bunkering, tees and greens were improved by Mike Clayton in 2000.

The course is designed through natural tea tree scrub, undulating par 5s and tight par 3 holes which require accuracy to hold the green.

Rates in the Top 30 golf courses in Australia every year.
I always look forward to being in Victoria in January to play the Pro-Am. Best Pro-Am in Australia.

Is it a good layout?
It’s a fantastic layout – will test all aspects of your game. Uphill / downhill / sidehill lies – you get them all.

What are the greens like?
Have always been good every time I’ve played there

How severe is the rough?
Ti tree can be a bit penal. But there’s some “open” holes as well

Is it a links course?
No

What are the dress standards?
What you’s expect from a club with standards

In summary – I love Portsea – it’s one a my favourite courses in the country. Not one person I know who has played there says too many unkind things about it. Well worth the effort to get too it’s ambience is surreal.

Thanks for the feedback. Really looking forward to playing it. I played a couple of the peninsula courses when I lived in Melb 20 years ago. Think I played it, and remember general impression, but not specifics.

Played it in July/August 2007 so it was a bit dry but some great short par 4’s….hard greens, very friendly club with a good pro and great young assistant pro. They will do a deal on gear or just happy to have a yarn and talk golf bulsh.

short but tough course especially when the wind blows and can be bloody cold in winter.

Want a good linksy course down there play Dunes or St Andrews Beach….or go over the other side of the bay and play 13th Beach
