Hello, I am 43 years old and have played golf on and off for years but never on a regular basis.

Anything is possible. I’m not sure if their are any age restrictions on starting a traineeship, although you need a 3 or better handicap and a Pro who would be willing to take you on.

hello poider . are you trying to wind somebody up?

This is one of Poider’s other posts… “Hi, I have played my 6th game of golf and I am getting frustrated with the ground, it keeps geting in my way I continuallyhit the ground about 6 inched before the ball, resulting in the ball rolling 20 feet ahead of me, How do I stop myself from hitting the ground?” I think once he resolves the problem of missing the ball, the pay cheques will start rolling in pretty regularly.

Far be it from anyone on these forums to say that Poider could not make a living out of playing golf. It was simply a question he asked. I asked the same questions, and it continues to be a goal of mine (although I have a nearly completed uni degree incase option A doesn’t work out). To take a leaf out of Tai’s book of quotes, if it is your dream, make it happen!

Sure. It’s a goal of mine too. But first I want to be on the first manned mission to Mars, win a Grammy for best rock vocal and win the 100m sprint at the Beijing Olympics in < 9.8 sec.

So you gave up on golf, but were a pretty decent golfer in your day then? Am I understanding you correctly?

Poider…not sure if you are attempting a wind up here…if so call me a sucker. You need to get down to a handicap of 3 or better. To do that I would suggest you will need to work a LOT harder than playing once a week unless you are freakishly talented. What sort of scores are you shooting at the moment? Good luck with it.
down and out…did ya get that? |

He needs to take 25 years off his life.

Let me rephrase my question. Firstly though I am not attempting to wind up anybody and didn’t think my question would stir such thoughts:

You need to shoot something around 72-73 on average to look at it, and that is to get a job as a club pro which means basically a 3 year apprentiship then work after that. Golf score improvement is a sliding scale, the difference from 130-104 is big, well done. But the difference from 104-90 is probably the same improvement again, then to 83-84 same again. Hell I break 80 fairly consistently and the difference between me and someone shooting around par (where I want to be) is massive. That said, if you want it, chase it, and chase it hard.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. As for getting into the money side of golf, your probably a very long way off (years and years of practice). Best advice, search far and wide for another job.

Poider, it’s always hard to tell when new users arrive whether they are trying to make genuine contributions to the community – or just create a bit of a stir. I can comfortably say that while golf is one of the few games that older competitors can compete at the highest level, the goal of becoming professional at 43 is not realistic, and anyone that tries to indicate that I’m wrong is doing you a disservice. If you enjoy playing and can afford to take a few lessons and improve your game, then you have a great journey of enjoyment – and some frustrations. And this is a great place to share your experiences and get more insights along the way. But the path to becoming pro is an very rare and difficult one which requires immense dedication, time, money, coaching, and many many years of learning plus bucketloads of talent and emotional reilience. Gifted juniors might take 5-10 years of work and support before they even have a chance to qualify for a card on a lesser tour. Most don’t make it, and many others just eke out a meagre living before taking jobs elsewhere in the industry. I’m sure there are many here who can share more specific experiences of this process. BTW – very sorry to hear of your redundancy. I voluntarily changed careers 10 years ago and found the transition surprisingly difficult. I hope you find satisfying employment soon.

Thank you once again for your thoughts, as for employment, (please don’t take this the wrong way), but I firmly believe that if a person wants to work they can find work, I am currently working as a contractor in a factory it is temporary but it pays the bills, and I know that I have the brain and work ethic to always find some form of employment and hopefully permanent employment.

Good attitude Poider. When I read about you being made redundant, I immediately thought you must be having a breakdown! I love the original post. The answer is that its a possibility but you’d have to work harder than you think. You have 7 years before you could go on the seniors tour and 7 years should be enough. However, those 7 years will be morning to midnight sessions to get good enough. That said, there is more than one way to make money at golf. You could get a job in a Golfsmith or Nevada Bob store. You could get a repping job for one of the manufacturers. You could learn to teach. Or you could finally invent an anti-slice ball!!! FGood luck with whatever you decide.
