Hi everyone, Just wondering where I should be looking to join if I move to Brisbane. I’m looking at Royal Queensland and Brisbane Golf Club. Currently I am a member of Royal Perth Golf Club which has reciprocal rights with both clubs, which means I will be able to play both when I first move there, but some info from the locals before I get there would be great. I guess the only stumbling block for me is the $8750.00 nomination fee for Royal Queensland. (Hopefully work will pay for that as part of my relocation costs) I guess what I would like to know is what the club culture and atmosphere is like at both clubs, and anything that I should know other than that. Cheers! Adam

I’ve play the Brisbane golf club, Top course, Not overly long with some out standing par fours, fairly flat, only a couple of drop aways, one on a par three, and a par five. I enjoyed the walk. It’s a very old and traditional course, i.e if you are going to wear shorts, you will be going, the knee high socks. I give the course big wraps at least a 8.5 out of 10. I’ve never played the Royal, but i’m friends with a pro that works there, so i’m sure to play it sooner or later, From what I hear, same sort of set up, very old school, but one of Brisbanes better, if not the best golf course. I’m a member at gailes, golf club one of brisbanes oldest, still traditional, but a little more relaxed. Plus we have got reclycled water. It has held the aust open in the 60’s. I belive it to be a fine course as well, and at $1200 with no joining fee. Brookwater is also open to membership as well, This is quite a out standing course, but a monster of a course, very long and tight. Good luck with the move, If you a looking for a follow parenter to have a bash with I’m more than happy to have you over as a members guest at galies. Cheers Nigel. I

Both are good courses and very traditional. Royal Qld has just received a major overhaul to make it more of a links course. Brisbane is also about to go through some course changes over the next few years and from what I’ve heard it may not be for the better. I hope not because it was one of my favourites. I have played all the Brisbane courses over the years and my favourite would still be Keperra where I was a junior member years ago. 27 holes with three mature and well looked after nines and a great club atmosphere. Depends what you are looking for from your membership. Clubs like Keperra have a tremendous atmosphere while I don’t think Brisbane and Royal could offer that.

Wow that’s not much of a reciprocal agreement, I would query that with Royal Perth for some justification. PT

I have played RQ several times over the last few years while visiting from Sydney. This was before and during the recent rebuild. I found it to be a most interesting course with friendly members. Long socks with shorts wasn’t a requirement if I recall correctly! I would expect that they would have dress and etiquette requirements at the conservative end of the spectrum but that doesn’t bother me in the least. In fact, it is my preference. I’m very much looking forward to playing the now completed course. It was looking very promising in September. I believe they have a secure water supply so condition should be consistently good.

HISPL why not stay a member at Royal Perth and play at RQ on the reciprocal rights and avoid the $8750 nomination fee ???? Or is there a limit to how many times you can play as a reciprocal ? If so then I would lobby RP to improve their sh1thouse arrangement with RQ !!! It should be unlimited – just like if you were a member of RQ.

I have gotten the full rundown from Royal Perth on the situation. Basically if I was only visiting Qld, I could play 12 games every year if I wanted to. If I take residency in Qld ans wish to play at Royal Queensland, I can only use my reciprocal rights for a period of 1 month and then I can become a “temporary” member and pay 4/3 (four thirds) the normal yearly due for a 12 month period and then I have to become a member. Nigel, I wear pants when I play, so I don’t have to worry about the long socks at Brisbane… however what happens if I wear a skirt? :P I think my father has played at Gailes, IIRC he thought the course was nice, and he played with a couple of blokes that were pleasant company. I’ve played Brookwater might try to dig up the info about corporate membership that I picked up when I was there. Nigel, I’ll take you up on that offer if you don’t mind, I think I might get you to do some club fitting/making work for me if you are keen too :) If I don’t get the job, I’ll still come to visit from time to time, I have some family that live in Qld. SJGC, I will continue my membership at Royal Perth regardless. But I can understand RQ being hesitant to let me use their course and facilities whilst I am paying fees at RP as they will only be getting income from my bar/restuarant spending… having said that last month I spent over $1k at RP so maybe they should offer me a concession! :P

Hispl, Brookwater is going away from public, and becoming a members only course, bit sad as I like to play there a couple of times a year. Clubfitting, I’ve shut up shop and only do one offs now, plain and simple i’m just to flat out. I’ve also looked at RB and the Brisbane courses as well, it’s the joinning fee, I can’t handle, as my wife and I move around, depending on her work. Thats why I joined galies. Good luck with the job. Nigel.

Thanks for your advice guys! Nigel, I appreciate that you have little time but might ask for your advice on who you might recommend to see over your way for clubfitting/making work. I have an “interview” (lunch) on Friday, fingers crossed, but the outlook is positive :)

RQ is ok, Brisbane is ok but there are many better clubs around Brisbane or on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coasts.

Gary from golf club inovations. Nice guy, he would be the best fitter i’ve ever came across. I would have him build my own clubs. He would also be one of the best coachs as well ( he’s with the Qld state team). Turned my swing around in 8 months. Hope all goes well with the job.

Thanks Nigel for the advice! If Gary is good enough for you to be happy with them coming from your background, he must be bloody excellent. I’ll look him up when I get there ;) Cheers!

I would suggest joining Bribie Island… Best hidden secret in South East Qld.. Hosted the Qld medal in 07 and will have the Qld Amateur (Matchplay) in 08.. I have played all the courses in Brisbane many a time under pennants and AB’s and Bribie is in the best condition of all ALL year round.

Cheers for the tip brendan69 I’ll try to get a game there and see what I think of the course. Some may think it a little shallow, but I am looking for a club that is a complete package, friendly members, good dining/restaurant/bar facilities and obviously a good course and practice facilities. I don’t particularly want to join a “club” that feels like a public bar with a nice golf course attached, what I mean by this is that I know of some clubs where it seems to be the culture of the club to be somewhat antisocial whereas RPGC has a very friendly atmosphere people would invite you to their table on the veranda to have a drink with them if you are alone etc etc whereas other clubs culture might be to sit in the corner of the bar swilling piss and not socializing with the other members that might be there. Seems a little odd some might think to consider this when joining a club, but not to me.

I have to agree HISPL on that score.. I was a member at Keperra and it was clicky to put it in one word, most clubs are but I have found Bribie to be pleasant and the other members welcome new comers always .. Well and truely worth a visit if you can make, look me up and I will try to take you out for a hit
