How bad is the rough at your course?

With the recent heavy rain in Melbourne, the rough at my course – Sanctuary Lakes, has gone crazy!! I would say its almost unplayable for an 18+ handicapper. Maybe this is just a links layout problem. How is your course looking?

Wow that roughs long… At my course (Fox Hills) the rough is ridiculously short… its a slightly thicker version of the fairway.. They recently moved the fringes so now they are just an extension of the greens too… I think Fox Hills is considered semi-private but could be wrong. Its where you can be a paying member but they also allow the public to play and because of that I think the rough is kept short to protect the punters from losing too many balls.
100% perfect is a sad neurotic state of mind. Better than
yesterday is saner. - Dart, 2008. |

At Bunbury the 2nd cut is slightly longer than the ball so no problem go into the trees and it all changes, some of it isnice clear and some I just hit a so called provisional knowing that I’m playing that ball. But I have never seen it let go to that length on any course.

I initiated this thread in the Cashmore pages a few months back out of frustration about the rough at my course. It describes our course as it is prepared by the committee… It is on page 2 of those pages under the heading The Role of Rough, or the address is… http://forums.iseekgolf.com... Cheers

Not my home course, but played it this morning. St Andrew’s Beach’s rough is completely wild. If you go into the rough, then the ball is lost there. It’s not just grass too, it’s weeds as well through the rough.

Getting longer each day.

There’s rough on golf courses?? I must try hitting a crooked drive one day and check it out!!

Go and play in the US Open one year or be a spectator there. You will not be able to see your feet at times let alone the ball.
You are kidding yourself if you think you can make it without hard-work. |

Brett there is plenty of rough at Rockingham and if you are really wild it is lost in bush.
Don't talk about it, do it , Life is to short. |

Don’t worry Topdog, there wouldn’t be an inch of bush at Rocko I haven’t visited at some stage! 16th green was nearly ready for last weekends event but didn’t quite come up to scratch. With a more reliable water supply now in place, we should see it in use well before Xmas. Cheers

i wish we had long grass at my course. i play at roxby downs and our rough is a bit giant bunker. in fact some fairways thats all this is. bloody sand. you can hit of a mat if you are in the fairway (between the white stakes) but if you miss. a) you play the ball as it lies b) you are most probably buried in the sand. splat!!! we have even got a special shot. its called the roxby shot. when you are in the sand you try and hit a thin chip shot with about a 6 or 7 iron and just try to get it back in the fairway. thankfully most our holes are very short so the course plays quite easy. but the par 5’s are awful. the finish to the front nine is nicknamed “the axis of evil” hole 7 – 470m par 5 index 3 no 8 fairways is about 15 metres wide & anything that lands in either the centre or right will roll off the right of the fairway into the sand. go left and you are in the trees. it can always be worse fellas.

I,m just down the road from you mrplou at RAAF Williams. The last day of our club Championships this weekend. Our Greenkeeper has kept the rough (rough) and its long. Mainly because of the Championships so that if your off the fairway you suffer. We welcomed that rain the other day as we are on restrictions and cant water the fairways and only water the greens 2 days a week. We don’t have our own water. Played Sanctuary Lakes a couple of months ago and a few of us lost balls in the rough there. Good luck in the Champioships
