I just finished golfing in the drizzle and mist this morning. I love golfing in that type of weather! Anyone else?

Here in Norway, if you withdraw from a comp because of the weather, you will probably be denied entry to the next tournament. Bad weather is no excuse for it – you should see some of the downpours they make you play in… Drizzle and mist is a bit of fun sometimes….sometimes you get the course to yourself if it is just the right time! BTW, how often does lightening accompany rain in the USA? Several people have told me that they will never play in rain over there because of the risk of lightening. Also, watched a golf program the other night where a European pro was heading over to the US for a tourney. He was packing his bag on camera, and when it came to his rain gear, he threw it to one side and said, “Don’t need it. They don’t play in the rain over there (the US)”

When it is misting and just sprinkling, it will rarely lightning. If it is raining, it will probably lightning. We get some pretty wicked storms over here. I bet you have only seen tornados in pictures over there. It is an a seasonal occurance where I grew up.

A tornado would be a certain type of terror during the hours of darkness – I assume a tornado siren sounds if possible? We had lightening during a snowfall this past winter. I dragged the kids in, but my neighbour thought it was okay to stay out….obviously not a golfer if he has no fear of lightning. BTW, who is your avatar? I assume a loved one?

Yes, we do have sirens that will sound if you are in a populated area. If you aren’t, you need to pay attention to the radio, TV, or have a weather radio. We get lightning when it snows too, it isn’t very common though. In the mountains where I lived the last couple years, it is more common, but still fairly odd to see. And the person in my avatar is my wife.

I don’t mind playing in the rain…. although, if it is constant heavy rain, it makes it less enjoyable.

Yeah a drizzle or light rain is ok, but heavy rain is no fun. Just put on the spray jacket and tough it out. Its ok with rain on its own, but wind + rain, thats no fun….

Just played the club championship foursomes in a heavy downpour this morning and it wasnt very fun. Supposed to be 36 holes in one day but got postponed after 8 lol. Greens were flooded. Light drizzle is cool but heavy isnt very fun.

Sometimes in the rain your expectations are low, you don’t try hollywood shots, you just knock it down the middle and suddenly you find you are scoring well. But most times your grips are slippery, your scorecard falls apart (metaphorically as well as literally) and you are miserable. But its still better than a day at work.

I love playing in light rain, except when it makes the course soft and thus lots of mud balls. But regardless, there isn’t any condition I haven’t played in. Well, I lie – I haven’t played in snow. Hey, if it’s good enough for the pros to play in, I’ll play in it.

I seem to play well in the rain. I also have a glove on each hand when its raining and it helps alot with grip. They are older gloves which are only used on these rainy days.

Played at Joondalup Sunday, the last six holes in heavy rain with no wind. Didn’t mind it but could notice the last three holes iron shots were coming out with a bit of topsin due to water on the clubface.

Good policy they have in Norway, Trysil. One thing I dislike in a comp situation is when my playing partner says “Bugger this. I’ve had enough” or “You wanna finish up here?” I always want to submit a card. So I want to continue, but he wants to pike it. I feel awkward when I say “Nope. I’m gonna soldier on.” I’d rather not be put in that position. I would, however, be O.K with him saying casually “I’ll tough it out, but if you’ve had enough let us know.” Fair enough. The weather is shitty, but he’s willing to battle through it. Courtesy and respect shown on his behalf.

I’m in the middle of a hurricane at the moment (caribbean) playing golf on a simulator.. I am not getting wet but does this count? Should see the waves! Very difficult trying to keep ones balance hitting a ball.
You are kidding yourself if you think you can make it without hard-work. |

I played today in the rain and it was great. It got heavy for a little while, but then it eased and it was nice. Just put the spray jacket on and enjoy the serenity as Dale Kerrigan would say.

Definitely. It’s the only way to see what mother nature is going to do next. Also, evens out the playing field …

Thinking of myself as a pretty competitive person, if they will let me on the course I will play. I enjoy playing in a bit of light misty drizzle, but agree with the masses that real downpouring rain is no fun. I enjoy playing on the course when it’s soft after a bit of rain, although not when totally soaked and most shots take a six inch deep divot.

I think the problem with Melbourne’s weather is that rain is mostly accompanied by strong gusty wind. In that case, I really resent playing in the rain. I played once at the Dunes where it rained. I retired after 9 holes and was completely exhausted by the time I walked back to the clubhouse. At the end of it, I had to eat 2 packets of fish and chips and slept for 16 hrs to get my energy back.

A little drizzle and thats about all. Anything heavier and I am outta there.

Happy to play in any rain we get here in Newcastle, I actually really enjoy playing in the rain if there is no wind. Happy to play in any wind we get here. but if you combine torrential rain and 40+know winds, then I’d rather stay in the club house and have an ale or 8.
