Adelaide - local knowledge??

Having moved from Brisbane to Newcastle and now Adelaide over the past 16 months I’m super keen to get back into golf again.

Hoping there’s a few Adelaide locals on ISG who can point me in the right direction.

1.Golf clubs – where to play and/or join? I’m living in Plympton, what’s priced OK and not too much of a drive?

2.Golf club makers – I’ll still continue to get stuff done through GCI in Brisbane but where/who’s good in Adelaide for the odd shaft or grip change, or maybe lie and loft check…etc?

Appreciate any help,I was a ISG member for a longtime but just rejoined today hence the new profile.

Regards

Deano

Drop me a line. I can point you in the right direction.

Hey appreciate the offer. How do I email you? Can’t seem to find that info. Deano

The pm’s don’t work here yet, Tim is at the O’Halloran Hill Driving range

Forgot about the pm issue. timbo@therange.net.au

Marcel, we should go for a hit again soon.

Suggest Flagstaff Hill, Thaxted Park or perhaps Blackwood in the hills.

Add the Vines to that list.

I haven’t lived in Adelaide for a few years. Is this a new course or re named?

TIA, Oenophile

Vines of Reynella, Blackwood or Flagstaff Hill would all be good choices.

They are part of a group of six clubs (including Riverside, Tea Tree Gully and Mount Osmond) that have recently commenced a new program that lets you play three free rounds a year at each of the six courses as part of your membership.

The Vines was formerly known as Marino GC.

No one has mentioned the western suburbs golf courses. If you don’t mind joining a waiting list and have a good deposit for a joining fee, there are a few.

Grange Golf Club – 2×18 hole courses, meticulously mainted all year round. Both courses are tough. Not to sure on the waiting list, but to get a 5 day membership, the wait isn’t that bad.

Royal Adelaide – Joining fee is a killer if you can wait the 7 years.. But if you can find people that are members, you’ll love it.

Glenelg – Don’t know what the waiting list is, but it’s a decent course, kikuya grassed as well (well some of the course is/was)

Riverside Golf Club – Not far from Royal Adelaide/Grange. Waiting list is short and course is half decent. Membership fees aren’t too bad there either.

Kooyonga – Just up the road from you. Good luck trying to get membership, but the course is fantastic. Just ask around and try to get a game with a member.

If you go further north (but will be a 35 min drive for you up Tapleys Hill Rd and along the esplanade) there is a 9 hole at North Haven. Course is fairly short, but has a few tough holes. Membership/green fees are cheap but the committee/members are a great bunch.

Another 9 holer is Regency Park GC. This is probably about 15 mins from you. Course is in pretty good condition.

As for golf equipment, the biggest is on the corner of tapleys hill rd and Sir Don Bradman Drive.. They have the widest range and do everything there to.

Spearfish. No one mentioned the ‘Big 4” as we all thought he actually wanted to play golf in the next couple of years. LOL. Sorry mate but 9 hole courses just don’t cut it for me & so I’d leave them off any recommendation list for a new comer to Adelaide especially when ther are so many other decent 18 hole courses on offer. PS Glenelg, aside from being the toughest track in town, hasn’t had a blade of Kike on it for years. Ah.. Monument.. The greenkeepers friend.

hmmmmm, I drive past this intersection each day I go to work, shop must be camouflaged well. Maybe try the one on the cnr Henley Bch and South Rds

Hey Deano, no offence to the good advice already received on this thread, here’s some more. If you don’t mind going 30-40mins north, visit Cam out at Sandy Creek GC. They’re out for new members, have no joining fee or waiting list that I know of, and you’ll score a full membership under $1k per annum. For a 7 day membership at a course with great variety in great condition and just far enough away so you can’t smell the big smoke. $30 for a 18 hole test drive, just another good option for you. Oh yeah, I get a lot of my gear from Kerry Elis golf on Main Nth Rd at Enfield, they’ve price matched everything I’ve seen on special and given me excellent service too. Also, the boys there hooked me up with a bit of coaching with Wally at the Drummond Club driving range next to the airport on Tapleys Hill Rd, be about 5mins from where you are. Happy golfing mate.

It's the only game in the world where you can call penalty on yourself. It's the greatest game there is.

Thanx for thr great advice/headsup guys. Much appreciated. Tim – I’ll be in touch mate. Deano

Hey Deano

How did u go with picking a course?

If u wanna try out the grange courses… Drop me a msg, Sunday arvo’s are good there with the added bonus of the Footy Park crowd cheer’n ur good shots. or boo’n ur bad ones.. :)

I see that no-one has mentioned North Adelaide. Two 18-hole courses (the South is longer and harder than the North) plus a par 3 in the city parklands. Memberships available including a “pay-as-you-play” option.

Well the north course was made out of the left over land from the south course, and you can tell at several holes that have been squeezed into strange spots around south course and surrounding roads. The par 3 is 18 holes, most of which are so short they are a pitch and putt affair only. The south course I think is the only reasonable quality course by design, of the three you mentioned. It’s also the only one you’ll have to book for, as it is quite difficult to get on some weekends. That’s why I didn’t bother mentioning it.

I know they are a awy out along the Flerieu ?? peninsula but :

Victor harbour : Invented ambrose there if you are into trivia typical park course but good value and nice views

Links Lady Bay : not to difficult when the winds not up but a good links course

Mcracken : Another good course in Victor harbour area

Gee,

U sure have a few great options there, one that has been failed to be mentioned and although it is a flat track is still one of Adelaide great public courses is the ” The Pat”

The Patawalonga may well be one of the closest courses to you and bye Sydney and Brisbane prices at around $20 dollars a round its a bargain too. Great local course for you.

Courses u must play: Victor Harbour, Macracken, Lady Bay, Fleurieu Golf course ( My Compass ), Thaxted Park, Gawler ( Sandy Creek ) & Highercombe ( Goat Track )

I did send deano a pretty comprehensive email that covered alot of tracks. It didn’t have Highercombe on it though…...for good reason. LOL.

Thaxted isn’t all that flash – in the same area Flagstaff Hill and The Vines would be a better option.
