Being an interstate visitor i can get a round at Royal Melbourne for $250. I am after peoples thoughts as to if they think this is worth it or would you rather play 3 lesser (but still great) courses. I have no doubt playing one of the worlds top 10 courses would be an unbelievable experiance, just interested what people think. Cheers

Too expensive, many other fine courses in Victoria.
As a victorian i would pay twice that to get on RM.
If someone tells you you are a swinger and then proceeds to try and make you a hitter ... run Quickly... |
I've never paid that much for 18 holes at The Daily Planet.
Bull, just one hole will cost you that much... at least
that's what I've been told. BTW, if you have $250 to spend on one round of golf, RM is worth the expence. Unfortuantely, I don't. Mick

Mick, obviously your "informant" is not a regular.

i'd check what srt of condition the place is in first if you can. if its is in decent nick, its worth it . if its not, its till worth it if you're a lover of classic gca

Muz I presume you're talking about RMW ? It's a lot of money for a game of golf but it is a great golf course. IMO it and Kingston Heath are the best two courses in the country and are certainly worth the large expense - especially for the one-off memorable experiences of a World class golf course. If you're talking about RME - I would baulk somewhat at the fee but we are talking about a Top10 Australia course...
It depends how important playing the best courses is to you. Playing courses of the quality of RMW will cost you comparable amounts overseas: I paid $211 for Royal Dornoch, The Old Course is about $300, Muirfield is $340 and Ballybunion is $250. You'll struggle to get onto a course of that quality in America.

Do vistors that are playing with a member have to pay a green fee? And if it's as high as $250, there goes my dream of having a round sometime in the near future.
The last time I played there it was $69 with a member.
Do they still have the Chaity Day (Sandringham Hospital I think) on Caulfield Cup Day? That used to be about $125 for a game, albeit a very slow one.
Do they still have that Composite Course day for $400. Yeah, I know we are not getting cheaper, but it's a great way to play the original composite course when not a member.
members guest rate has jumped to $80 I believe.

Greens on the west were fully cored and sanded 3 weeks ago, so if you were planning on paying $250 I would wait a month to make sure the greens are back to their best. I was there 2 weeks ago and the practice fairway and short game area were both closed also. They are constructing target greens on the practice range and completely remodelling the short game area behind the old pro-shop.

I would pay $250 for a round there. But like many, I doubt I will ever get the chance.

Cams Why wouldn't you ? As Jack said there are Charity Days that you could enquire about...
Because I never thought it would be possible. I don't know any memebrs, didn't know about the charity days. I just did a bit of a search, can't find any recent info, Sandringham Hospital latest I could find 2003, need a group of 4 $500. #%&^#& site, found a 2004 calender of charity events. It does look like I need to get myself the Golf Course Guide. edit, lol, just noticed what this site did with another sites name, oh no. I'll get banned now, sorry.

I think the charity day Jack might be referring to is the same one I played in about 4 years ago. From memory it was about $115.00 and was run by the Black Rock Sports Auxilliary.
I remember walking away thinking what all the fuss was about. But
then again I played the East course and the course wasn't in
great nick. The greens had about 1/2 inch of fuzz, but I realised
why when the group in front of me cracked open their first can of
VB on the second hole - we teed off about 6:30 in the morning
I did a google search and the phone number is 9598 0557.

I believe the composite tournament is on November 6th this year.
I've played this 3 times in the last 4 years and it is worth
every cent. The weather has been perfect each time. Apart from
playing the composite course, you get lunch, a gift pack and a
terrific 4 course dinner for $400. Prizes are sensational as
well. A group of us go down each year and play Metro (reciprocal
rights with The Aussie) and Moonah Links (reciprocal Club Corp
course). With the Cup on Tuesday, 5 days in Melbourne doesn't
get much better than this.

As others have said - go do a black rock sports auxilliary
search. Spots filling fast. I play this most years. It's great but bloody slow. The Composite Course day ($400) is well and truly worth it. The weather was very tough last year. 3 club northerly & it pelted down for the last 3 holes. The bloke who won it was a hack too. Easy-ish day to clean up a very good prize pool. MM
