The Legend of Bagger Vance

Most here have seen The Legend of Bagger Vance, I assume.
Just putting it out there that, for what it’s worth, it’s my fave golf movie of all I’ve seen. Every time I watch it I remember just why I love this game so much. It’s fiction, of course, but it’s great how it weaves real-life legends of the game (Bobby Jones & Walter Hagen) into the story. And some of the things Will Smith’s character says about the game of golf are absolute pearlers in my opinion – real wisdom there. All his lines about finding your “authentic swing” and likening the game of golf to life may be a bit too philosophical or airy fairy to some, but for me that’s the kind of thing that really makes me want to blow off everything else and get out on the course and play some great shots… . For those who’ve seen it, anyone else feel the same? Obviously movies like Happy Gilmore and Caddyshack are funnier, and are hilarious, but in terms of movies that inspire me to play golf and better myself as a golfer, can’t go past The Legend of Bagger Vance. There’s another recently released movie called Seven Days in Utopia with Robert Duvall that’s not bad and is along similar lines (actually features a cameo by KJ Choi), but the script feels a bit too forced for me…

Tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

Thanks Fuz its been a while since Ive seen but did enjoy.

FYI- Our own HeadPro was Will Smith’s golf coach getting him ready for the movie!!

Keep it surreal folks.

Bagger Vance…. if you like the movie then do yourself a favour and read the book. I re-read it every 6 months or so. Bloody good.

That’s awesome mate! Of all the actors in that movie, the one who looks like he actually plays golf (ie, has a natural, really good looking swing) is the bloke who plays Bobby Jones. Wonder if that is a coincidence, or their criteria was for an actor that was also a solid golfer….this is Bobby Jones, after all….

Thanks mate. I’ll have to track it down. Nice courses in the movie – some filmed at Kiawah Island…

Hey Fuz,

Couldn’t agree with you more and yes the book is better than the movie.

The inside scoop on Will Smith, he’s good at everything he ever tried except you know what – Golf. What is it about this game that humbles the most talented?

What most don’t realize about the film is that its based on the Sanskrit poem, Bhagavad-Gita – the Hindu religion.

I am yet to see the whole movie… have seen clips and it seems great.

Too much slow play means that golf has a wait problem

good movie,

naturally we would all like golf movies

tin cup
caddyshack
happy gilmore
legend of bagger vance
for love of the game (my favourite)

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

There’s another recently released movie called Seven Days in Utopia with Robert Duvall that’s not bad and is along similar lines (actually features a cameo by KJ Choi),

What is notable about that movie is the golf pro is being played by a real golfer, Lucas Black plays off about scratch. So its one of the few golf movies where the golf swings by the main actor do not look contrived, like in Bagger Vance and Tin Cup.

..

Great movie,
As above
Tin cup
Caddy shack
Happy Gilmore
Bagger vance

And have to add The greatest game ever played., watched again the other night, and a true storey about the Us open
Must watch for love of the game, what’s it about hAcKpRo?

I thought “For Love of the Game” was a baseball movie.

Shot more than 36 points in an OOM day….seriously.
Smoldy. When only the best will do.

Bagger Vance was only seen by Matt Damon, and the kid at the golf club right?

Smoldy. Like the Grand Canyon….one of the few things in life that when you see it, it doesn’t disappoint.

The Legend of Bagger Vance has been referred to as the Fields Of Dreams of Golf. Both stories have a higher entity as the central theme in their respective sports.

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

It’s a cracker must watch for any one that has not seen it

Man up and go for it

Best golf movie of all time is Goldfinger.

Fore!

Has anyone seen Golf in the Kingdom?
That’s my favourite golf book but never seen the movie available, I’m guess it won’t live up to the book as the book is pretty spiritual

Billy Dunk is my hero…

I thought Bagger Vance was quite shit to be frank – no good serious golf movies really ever been made.

Just watched The Greatest Game Ever Played for the first time – loved it!!! I know the movie embellished a bit of the drama for artistic license (ie, in the 18-hole play-off it didn’t come down to the last hole – I read somewhere that Ouimet won by six strokes) – but it’s such a great underdog story. And one of the best things about the movie is seeing the great Harry Vardon depicted. Stephen Dillane did a great job portraying the greatest British golfer of all-time. If in real life Vardon was anything like he was portrayed in this movie, he must’ve been such a gentleman. I love the part where he goes off at Lord Northcliffe about class and winning for “sheer pride at being the best”. Great movie for anyone who loves golf and golf history. I’d like read the book, and also The Match, another golf non-fiction by Mark Frost.
I’d probably put The Greatest Game… and The Legend of Bagger Vance equal. The former is great cos it depicts an historic event that actually happened, the latter is great cos of some of the philosophy, wisdom and virtues it extols about the game of golf. Good stuff on both fronts:).

The Greatest Game Ever Played.
Also, Bobby Jones – if only for the depiction of Walter Hagen.

Seven days in utopia was HORRIBLE!! It was pretty much a 90 minute commercial for Callaway and The Church.

+1 for reading The Match. Fantastic book about the true story of when amateurs Ken Venturi and Harvey Ward took on Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson in a one off match at Cypress Point

Practice hitting golf shots, don’t just practice hitting golf balls

i just watched 7 days in utopia last night it was far from horrible as a golf lover….

no it certainly wasnt the greatest movie ever made, but hey any movie made about golf with a quality actor in it cant e a bad thing….

i thought it was ok

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

I liked Tin Cup a bit more than Bagger Vance, but haven’t seen it in ages.
