more useful: compass or gps?

Topic pretty much says it all. What would you find more useful on a golf course? I personally have not used a compass before as I hear they are banned, but I’m not sure what I’d do with one if they weren’t..

gps, never used a compass as no need for one. Why would a compass be useful? maybe to tell where wind coming from but it is easy to work out where north is anyhow. golf gps has got to be one of the best innovations of the last 10 years!!

Personally I prefer my sundial and barometer. They seem to provide the best pair of infoirmation ;-)
Handicap, I’m working on it. – Edit: Feb 2013 still, working on it. |

I ask as I was explaining to my wife why smartphones were banned from comps… Because they have a compass, or so if been told. her answer: of what use would a compass be? I guess to match prevailing winds. I’m not sure I would find it that useful either. So is it a silly rule?

I thought they were band for weather reports

i think it is banned for having the ability to give additional information such as wind speed/direction, etc

I’m just glad that my Bata Scouts don’t fit me any more, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to wear them while playing in a comp.

I much prefer to use a compass over a gps, or laser…..... Why?? Simple really. Before I tee off, using a syringe I put little bits of liquid metal into my ball. When im hitting either straight north or south, my ball goes further because of the magnetic properties and pull of the north pole. And when I’m hitting either east or west, I can allow for the draw or slice that’ll happen because of the magnetic pull. That’s why a compass is essential on a golf course and why I can’t play without one!!
grooveless, the only way to play golf…… now a ’groove-snob’, and never going back!! :) |

Definitely a compass; I could face Mecca and say a prayer before each shot.
