The ball....a much bigger issue than anchoring!

Seeing as the anchoring discussion has engaged such healthy debate, what do we make of the ball? I think the ball goes too far, plain and simple. I would much rather see the ball wound back before the anchoring issue is attacked. I have very clear ideas around the ball and believe that it is causing a lot of the real issues affecting golf as a whole My only hope is that the anchoring ban is testing the waters to take on the ball manufacturers. And before Crrack chimes in suggesting I’m a small hitter, I played RM West two weeks ago and the longest club I had in for a second on a par 5 was a 6-iron. This shouldn’t happen on a great course and the ball is the major issue.

If you do research on the history of golf, the most common issue on what is the biggest problem in golf at that time – is the ball. Yet the game continues to flourish and the balls keep getting better. On the other hand, anchoring is relatively new, one generation old. The games governing bodies see a need to amend the definition of a golf stroke which happens to do away with anchoring.
Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf. |

Lucky enough to dine with Jack Nicklaus (and 498 others) on Thurs nite at The Australian GC. This question was asked of him and he said “the ball” is the biggest issue so you guys are on the mark.

I’d say you are a massive hitter if your longest into par 5 at rmw was a 6 iron. 300m drives hey….

I’ll say there are problems with golf balls. Mine won’t consistently strike the middle of my club face.

Berni, that’s my point. I don’t consider myself a very long hitter, I am definitely not a short hitter but know heaps of guys at both clubs I am a member of that hit the ball way further than I do. RM West should not be reduced to a pitch ‘n’ putt because the regulators don’t have the gumption to take on the ball manufacturers. A pro at one of these clubs reckons that the day the Pro V1 came out guys were hitting it 30 yards longer overnight. Hitting driver 14 times a round and that makes a course 420 yards shorter….overnight! The simple fact is that courses keep getting longer, more expensive to maintain, use more water and take longer to play than they should, none of which is good for the game of golf.

The ball companies would not care less if the ball was wound back, to play golf you still need a ball regardless of the maximum velocity it goes. Same as the square grooves ban, club makers just started getting new sales for conforming wedges, ditto long putters.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game! |

There balls do go further now there is no question about it. I dont think it makes much difference to club golfers because with all the advances in technology the average handicap has been about the same for 20 years

Weekend_Hacker, that’s a valid point, the average amateur just hits it further into the crap which makes the game even slower!!

Well said. I can never understand why ball manufacturers argue so much against winding it back eg threatening law suits etc – people still need to play a ball and most players will still want to use the same ball the pros use. As long as they make a good quality ball and market it well, then they are still going to make good dollars. Balls only last one round or so. It would solve the problem because it won’t affect most amateur players who can’t get the most out of the best balls anyway.

I think the OP has a point on the ball. However, RM West Par 5’s are not long holes for par 5’s, even from the tips.

why a picture of a mower? I belive the mower has had the biggest impact in the game over the last 15 years the greens are perfect on tour the fairways are like concrete – so the ball rolls and rolls the sand in bunkers is often perfectly raked that its better to go into a bunker than it is into the rough slow the fairways a bit this would knock 30-50 meters off the drives then slow the greens a bit slower bumpy greens are harder to putt on….. the modern pro loves fats fairways and fast greens…...for mine the mower and other course equipment has had a far greater effect than the ball

Not when you drive the ball so far, as you do. Long enough for me though. ;-)

If i had access to these balls when I was a good player off 2 twenty years ago, wow, I would have been great, the ball and driver are the two things that stand out for me,

I blame sheep. If they didn’t have sheep at St Andrews then golfers would never have the troubles they have now. http://sportsnola.com/sport...
