It is staying 5 years. Here we go? Not a fan I gather, Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!
Shanks I meant “here we go” re the usual well get Clayton in (why is it always his name btw?) and watch out…all forgiven.
RP used to be 27 holes and the strongest nine in my opinion was sold off for housing. Now you have the front nine which although short is ok at best, then the back nine with about 3-4 silly holes jammed in.
The course isn’t befitting of hosting our PGA…...just my opinion.
Financially you’ll have RACV …yes I know they may be flush…..and they’ll pump every cent into the course….they ave too….that leaves a vet tired resort that hasn’t been updated since inception over what must be at least 20 years so now.
So putting your bean counters hat on….,they are going to spend $5mil on what?
They are on a hiding to nothing….$5 million won’t touch the sides there.
Last point….just being honest. It’s a straightforward “feel good” resort course….you know lob up with hardly any sleep….beers on course and still shoot 39-40 points coming from a decent track.
The attraction of money is why they’ve do e it but I believe they’ve even further sold out the tradition of the event. The Oz Open field in Sydney last year was average at best…..,what can you expect up there

i’m glad it’s on the coast, now i don’t have to drive anywhere to watch the men play :) in terms of the venue, great for the crowds, there was really nowhere else on the coast that could’ve hosted it, hope island and the glades etc just couldn’t handle the crowds and surely the money will be spent on the green complexes, every green on the course is as flat as a biscuit, and they’ll need to grow the rough up and narrow the fairways or the lads will leave this thing with it’s pants down, considering kari webb’s winning scores have regularly been in the -26 vicinity, -30 for the men is actually a very real possibility. perhaps some new back tees and turn the back 9 par 5’s into par 4’s? all good news either way, i can’t wait
As I mentioned earlier if they use the new 9 holes where the greens are anything but flat and modify some other bits and pieces it will be a challenge.

Nikey, I think you’re missing some pretty big points here… NO ONE wants to sponsor golf events in Australia these days… With the RACVs backing for five years, this guarantees the tournament of having a future, which isn’t a certainty… Look at the heineken classic, it was at the best course we had.. broke.. gone.. never to be seen again…
This may sound harsh to the yanks, but some of the courses they play on, would be no better than Royal Pines and yet they stage great events… The royal pines is a good facility, hotel on site and with some renovations will be good for TV and spectators, which, is probably what is needed right now…
I also don’t get your point about the oz open in sydney, are you saying it’s a shit tournament or the field is shit because the Lakes is a crap course (I thought you liked the Lakes?) – because if your contention is the Lakes is a good course, and still gets shit fields, then the PGA have made the right decision doing something right for players and spectators, as opposed to finding a pure course…
And the Royal pines is 6570m off the blacks, if you go there, nail a few beers and shoot 40 points, i’ll pay for your round…

Funny how the heineken classic went from being a hugely popular tournament and a strong financial one at the Vines in WA then moved to Melbourne and died.
It should be said that these tournaments would get more exposure and crowds if they were to be shared around the country imo.
We have great world class tracks all around this country, yet they never see a pro tournament.

Your line of thinking will seriously detract from the potential field and overall status of the event.
you missed my point entirely. i said they are going to have to toughen it up plenty or we are going to get ridiculous scores of -30 etc. i don’t want to see that either
also like i said, a better course would have been good but name one which is in a good location with plenty of public transport, parking, accomodation and can handle large numbers of public on foot?

Read the article below from Golf Digest to maybe understand where I’m also coming from:
ROYAL Pines is certain to come under fire for being too easy for top pros after winning surprise hosting rights for the Australian PGA this year.
The prospect of birdies on a platter at a Gold Coast layout where Karrie Webb has fired her career-low tournament total of 26-under par is certain to rankle with traditionalists.
An announcement today on the Gold Coast is set to unveil the RACV Royal Pines layout as the new home for the tournament.
It will be final confirmation that the prestigious event has made a clean cut from billionaire 2012 host Clive Palmer and his Coolum resort on the Sunshine Coast.
The RACV Royal Pines Resort has a wonderful track record over two decades as a host of the Australian Ladies Masters.
The on-course hotel, practice facilities, welcome and vibe are first class but where it trips up is at the most basic requirement: how much of a test will it be for the men?
Unfortunately, it will have to reinvent itself in a major way to challenge the ilk of former US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy, the 2008 Australian PGA champion who has been a Coolum regular.
Winner Webb and top lady professionals tackled a layout configured at less than 6000m in February.
For the men, the course is always at around 6600m. Not only will extra length have to be found on some holes, the rough will have to be grown, fairways narrowed and greens quickened on the flat, wide-open layout.
The par may also have to be trimmed from 72 to 70.
When the course was challenged by a pro field last October, Steven Jeffress fired a final round nine-under-par 63 to take out the Jeep Hi-Lite Pro-Am.
If 2012 champion Daniel Popovic is to go close to defending his crown, he will have to look at shooting 25- or 26-under.
Palmer baulked at the PGA of Australasia’s model of being a sponsor as well as a host when failing to come up with the estimated $1 million in sponsorship to stay in the hunt.
Hope Island, a previous host of the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1997, would have been a more challenging Gold Coast layout but the best commercial model has always been a high priority for Australian golf’s ruling body.
Royal Pines has always been proactive in bidding for events and the backing of car insurance giant RACV has been the deal-clincher.
The Australian PGA had an 11-year run at Coolum.
Whether it is played at Royal Pines or Royal Melbourne, the Australian PGA is still the country’s oldest professional golf event and deserves a top field. - See more at: http://www.news.com.au/spor....OHcEZv7b.dpuf

My point re The Australian Open was if it struggled getting a quality field on a course that s**ts all over Royal Pines and is located much more centrally, what serious hope are they going to have to attract a quality field there. (Without paying some big appearance fees and asking some favours of the old favourites).

Royal Pines is a resort course with very receptive and open fairways with massive greens catering to all standards of players.
That is a recipe for low scores!

Nikey
yes the current course is easy
$5 million to spend on the course should toughen it up somewhat
The prize money, world ranking points and timing will mean all tournaments will struggle to attract good fields no matter what courses are played
Why might it be Clayton? – his work has been well received in most instances and courses have gone up the rankings, clients must like him or maybe he is the cheapest bidder
Ask him?

I heard one of the head bananas from the Aus PGA on the radio last night talking about the decision to play the event at RP.
He mentioned that the event was popular among Aussie players because it was such a social event in Coolum with the ‘village’ and the like, so they were keen to find a venue that could offer a similar environment. Royal Pines provides that. It seems that a lot of the draw card for the event is its basically an end of year party for the players with a bit of golf thrown in.
He also mentioned that the City of Rockhampton put in a very strong bid for Yeppoon GC, or words to that effect. Now, without being disrespectful to the fine folk of Yeppoon it doesn’t sound like their were too many to quality courses in Qld queuing up to hold the event if Yeppoon was next in line to win the hosting rights (which is what I think the guy was intimating).
I think it would’ve been interesting to see which courses were interested in hosting it if the Aus PGA said they’re happy to send it outside of Qld.

Questions:
What real impact does course layout or timing of year have for a player when deciding which tournament they will play each year?
How much impact does the prize money have on a player deciding where to play.
If there was a boatload of money up for grabs do you thing players would care much about the toughness of the course, or still show up to win some cash and a great title?

Answer – world ranking points are king, you want to be in top 50 to make the Masters etc so those safely in won’t attend those that aren’t might
The US and European Tour events go over a calendar year now and the events carry more ranking points and have stupid end of season cash tournaments (DEdex/Race to Dubai).
Out tournments will die slowly until they are co-sanctioned. The Perth International (co-sanctioned) is bigger than the PGA, Masters and Australian Open.
We need to get One Asia, Asian, Japanese and Korea tours to merge drop the Aussie Masters and have 3 co-sanctioned Asian tour events and 1 or 2 NZ events.
Unless this happens your will see the US PGA and European tour gradually steal events and sponsors from the region.
Hey, lets bring on a proper world tour as Norman suggsted and get rid of all tours and have Tier 1,2 and 3 events. Won’t happen but would be in the best intersts of the game.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!

Chicken and egg story
You don’t get good world ranking points if the best players don’t turn up and they won’t because their allegiances lie elsewhere.
The course does not matter. Pros play many crap courses during the US PGA tour.
Some of the best aussies only turn up out of a sense of doing the right thing by the tour they started on, perhaps even guilt. Most would prefer not to play after a long season I would suspect.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!

The course matters very little, pros will play on a goat track if the money is there.
As for if you hold it at a great course, it will attract great players, that argument simply does not hold true.

RACV wants to improve RP ! They have the money and they also own that course and they recognise that the course do need a huge up date.
RP still have 27 holes. Used to have 36 !
I hope they do not increase the green fee after updating ! Sure the fee will be up after the 1st PGA.

For a start as I’ve mentioned before on some other previous topics re The PGA, I really don’t understand why there is this unwritten rule about Melbourne having The Masters, Sydney having The Open and Qld having the PGA. I’ve always maintained that all three deserve to be played across the country on our finest courses. And if that means that the 3 courses are in timbucktoo and all want to committ to staging the events in the same year then great. But to be potentially holding it back based on state boundaries is dumb.
I’ve also noted before that for the good of the long term viability of the tourney and for the opportunity for The PGA to actually make a quid out of the event, they should sell the rights to manage the tourney to the likes of say IMG, SEL or similar.
That way they can actually get something back by way of a management fee, as well as any profit share plus they get the kudos for hosting what potentially could be a strong event commanding worldwide interest, a strong field, world ranking points etc etc.

Languid, I have played the course and agree. For a resort style course it is perfect. Not too difficult & playable by golfers of all levels. Could they toughen it up without losing that all round playability. I think that would be extremely difficult.

Nikey
You are dreaming of days long past.
IMG staged the Masters, there was one man and a dog there and almost no world class players.
There is little chance that turned a profit.
The recent Victorian PGA was more successful.
The Australian Open survives purely on the back of amateur affiliation fees.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!
