Hey guys… i play of a HC of 18, Ive never been fitted and never had a lesson…

I want to do both but just wondering which one u consider to be of more importance??? and which one should be done first?

The reason why i ask this is because as of late. i have developed a hook and the club face seems to always feel closed and im not sure if its a swing problem or because my clubs havent been fitted properly.

Get a lesson, then get fitted (though admittedly I did it the other way round)

Until you have a consistent swing, any fitting is more of an art than a science.
However, to get down to 18, you must surely have a reasonable swing.

I’d recommend the fitting first.

Why would you get fitted first when its concievable the lessons may change the swing

Can you post a pic of your grip?

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

Get the lesson first. at least that way you will discover what is the cause of your bad shots before spending money on a set of clubs that may end up not suiting the swing that you develop after a lesson or 2.

What if poorly suited clubs are causing adjustments to the swing that would be unnecessary if the clubs were correctly fitted?

It’s a chicken & egg thing.

Wouldn’t the pro fitting the clubs make a few adjustments to your setup/posture first up when your addressing the ball before you even swing the club? they would have to do this to arrive at your lie angles. Then he will know what he is dealing with when you come back for the lessons to improve???

Well in my case, I took up the game again after a long break, played for about 6 months so that I was hitting the ball more consistently, then got fitted for clubs. I probably should have had some lessons first, but in my defence I really wanted new shiny clubs. So that was the decider. As it happens I was fitted by someone who was also a teaching pro and who recommended that I didn’t need a lesson just then, but to get one after using the new bats for a couple of months (which I still haven’t done).

Nice point Deege.

Find a teaching pro who is experienced in fitting. Kill those two chickens (or eggs) as OldBogey was referring too, with many new fitting clubs!

Handicap, I’m working on it. – Edit: Feb 2013 still, working on it.

Get the hook fixed first.
New clubs won’t magically fix your swing problems.
The Pro will have a look at your clubs and tell you if they are suited to you and make suggestions re length and shaft strength etc.
Then go and get a fitting and some new toys.
