The ‘spirit of the game’ has allowed players to FREELY swing their clubs by any method they can conjure up, provided their swing line doesn’t go between the feet. Now they’re trying to specify how the club is to be gripped, or not gripped. What’s next?

Hehehe… I ignored that earlier post Bernie because anchoring doesn’t allow for free swinging of the putter. It cuts the arms out of the stroke and welds the club shaft to the body. The motive power of the stroke comes from the body. All the arms and hands have to do is support the putter and keep the shaft on its address plane. When the shaft stays on plane the putter face stays square to the plane line. There will be some arcing both horizontally and vertically but the face remains square. Shanks got it right in his post.

How about banning the short putter? Make it compuslory to use the long putter. Everyone on the same playing field again. Then after a couple of years allow the short putter back and see how many go back to it.

Guan Tianlang, the 14 yo sensation from China who won the recent Asia Pacific Amateur in Thailand uses a belly putter. His win gets him into this years Masters. I wonder how many young players in the Orient and Asia have been influenced by his putting method. The proposal to ban anchoring is understandable in the context of the traditions of the game.
When you think about it 30 years (time anchoring has been permitted) is not that long for a game that has been played since the 15th century.

BTW if they ban anchoring then the Kucher method will also have to go. You can’t have a rule that doesn’t allow anchoring from the elbow down and then allow anchoring from the wrist up to the elbow via the Callaway putter. One or the other !!!!!!!!

On the golf show(episode 4) on foxtel last night , they quoted jeff minchem from usga as saying the usga is going to fight the ban made by the r and a, as it’s not in the best interests of the uspga tour!
