Two aspects to this, Kunti.

First, a player is not permitted to update himself with information that was not available before he commenced his round. Specifically, information that may assist how he plays, such as determining updated weather. He must not use a compass, but he can use his wristwatch to determine north.

Secondly, for distance measuring devices (DMD), the device must not be capable of obtaining updated weather info, etc., even though such capability is turned off. Every phone that has GPS also has a compass, so it may not be used as a DMD.

Strangely, you are allowed to use your phone as a phone, even though it is capable of getting weather info, north, etc.

Completely illogical, buts that the R&A and USGA for you.

The question here is whether one may use their phone to report scores to GameBook. That shouldn’t be a problem. However, to look at other players’ progressive scores would be a breach because that info was not available before commencing the round and, knowing how well someone ahead of you is doing, may well alter how you choose to play.

The stupidity of all this is that you can’t use the DMD functionality on your phone because you could possibly do something that’s not permitted. But you can use your phone for other stuff provided you don’t acquire updated info.

I would like to stress that I have had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of these rules.

In consideration of these rules, tour players should not be permitted to look at the leaderboard until they’ve finished their round.

I would have thought knowing the score is the same as someone telling you the distance.

I’d ask the rules guys, but I’ve already had my spanking for the evening, and am quite sated in that regard.

probably will be head scorer the guys i am playing with are just worried about scats and swear jars and having fun. and 1 is a woman..

I look at leader boards after every hole I play and they get updates so I can’t see an issue, I play shit golf anyways so no score is gonna influence me, for mine
