Was Jan Stephenson right?

Racism rears its ugly head again. Does it matter a toss what nationality they are or the colour of skin their skin. I enjoy watching good golf whether male or female. It is a bonus if they have a good personality as well. I don’t normally watch womens golf because so little of it is televised live. The NZ Womens Open at Clearwater received very little coverage in NZ, certainly no live coverage, so it was a pleasure to be able to watch the Australian Womens Open live. I think we are in for a very exciting time over the next few years as long as Lydia KO can concentrate entirely on being as good as she can be. Her work ethic is tremendous, and for anyone who works as hard as she does at her game, she deserves all the success that hopefully will come her way.

When you say ‘same’ I guess you mean Asian all look the same. Really?

For heavens sake! This a 1`0 year old Quote & womens golf has come a long way since then. There is nothing boring about womens golf. Sure they show little emotion much of the time. Shows how well the concentrate.

So what do you think Cabbageman – is there any merit in what she said ?

I find woman’s golf a giant snore fest regardless of who’s playing. Any Par4 over 380m and the commentators start making excuses why half them can’t hit the GIR. I don’t really care that they can’t hit the ball far enough to reach a long Par4; but if that is the case then don’t set the course up that way then start making excuses for their obvious shortcomings.

That’s not unexpected. You’re a seagull.

I will watch hot wonmen do anything and the fact they are playing golf is just a bonus really
Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding? |

I don’t think she was too far off the mark – 10 years ago. The Tour has lost a lot of events in the USA, and I suspect that when the GFC hit businesses looked very hard at where their sponsorship dollar went. Having a lot of drones who were, quite frankly, god awful when it came to engaging with the media/public did the brand a lot of harm. It is no surprise that the Tour has evolved the way it did, with events now being played in Asia.

Well in fact she was. The comment was stupid and racist back then and has now been proven to be more so today. The Asians have added depth and quality to the LPGA and the womens tour is in stronger shape than ever. 8 of the top 10 ranked players are Asian so if they weren’t there, those spots would be filled by lesser players. There’s more tournaments, coverage and sponsorship (much of it from Asian companies) than ever before so the the proof of the pudding is hardly there. The Asians are strenghtening the tour, not killing it! Jan Stephenson was well known for putting her foot in her mouth and this diatribe was a classic example. She’s also been shown to be a sore loser as evidenced by her hissy fit when she was eliminated from Dancing with the stars in 2011.

People are very quick to throw out the racist tag, but I think they are a little off the mark. I think what she was trying to say is that professional golfers have a responsibility to provide entertainment. Playing the game is only part of that. Giving interviews and promoting the Tour is also something that they should be doing. Simply turning up and playing, and not doing the other stuff is selfish.

Coleslawboy, I remember Jan naked in a tub of golf balls. That was entertaining.:)
Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf. |

Of course it was racist. She didn’t say that provided that the players were entertaining and took their responsibility to integrate into the game seriously, then it would be okay, she said that the Asians were “killing it”. She advocated for a quota on Asian players. She lumped together a particular racial group and said that they all had the same personality and behaviour (regardless of the truth of that) and she said it was what was killing the game. She didn’t level a similar criticism at Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam and any of the other white players who show little emotion when they play. So if she intended to say what you suggest she intended to say, then she went the wrong way about it.

Exactly, it was racist then, is racist now and was another example of Jan Stephenson putting her foot in her mouth. It’s also been overwhelmingly proven to be wrong so why are we even discussing it.

This hits the nail on the head. It was nothing more than foot in mouth.

Without wanting to make any connection to the OP, I wonder the thoughts about this hypothetical. Which would be better? 1. A politically correct (inclusive) tour that flounders due to lack of interest? or 2. A more secular (ie. less inclusive) tour but one which thrives because of high interest levels?

Seagull pffft; albatross thankyou. None of which makes the LPGA any more interesting : ) No.2 and whether it is held in the US, Europe or Asia or all three seperately is irrelevant ; )

TTR, if there is any real growth area for interest in women’s golf (including money and secondary tours) it is coming at the moment from Korea and not the US. Why would you revert to a pro-US model to pander to a crowd who is less interested. I think it is no surprise that the tour has to follow the money to those that are interested in supporting it.

Also a lot of sponsorship money is now coming from Asian Companies – Honda, Kia, Mizuno, Ricoh etc.

Why are those up coming ladies golfers are from Korean back ground ? I was surprised that there were Thai girls on the leader board. Any Indian or Pakistani girls in the Ladies Tour ? I thought size does have an advantage in golf.

Now there’s an idea.. Pick any popular golf course in Australia and cover the Sat or Sun comp the same as they do with the “pro’s”. It would be a lot more entertaining and educational then the machanical robots we watch on tv.

Not all Korean. Yani Tseng, world No 1 is from Taipei and there’s two Japanese women, one Chinese and 4 Koreans in the women’s top 10.

I think its this simple and some of the worlds leading coaches have made this comment also…. the asian players are prepared to work so much harder! they will pratcice to their hands bleed..a bnumber of coaches have said this they just work and work compare Japanese working culture to ours? I also think physical shaoe adds to the intruge, asian women are so suited to golf…strong yet so flexible same reason that part of the world produces the best gymnists also instead of cmplaining about we need to work harder….and somehow be more flexible which is harder to do
Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding? |

I would be facing too many fines and suspensions. No thanks.
