Golfer extracts redback venom with golf tee

A SWEDISH golfer has used a tee to extract venom from her leg after being bitten by a redback spider during a tournament in Canberra. The Swedish Golf Federation reported on their website how 24-year-old Daniela Holmqvist saw a redback spider on her lower leg and then felt a sharp pain above her left ankle. Seeing her leg swell up, Holmqvist did not seek medical attention but instead grabbed a golf tee from her bag, pierced her skin and squeezed out as much venom as possible. “A clear fluid came out,” she said. “It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever done but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible.” The Swedish federation added that, after the incident took place at the fourth hole, an unfazed Holmqvist went on to finish her round with medics monitoring her progress. She finished the qualifying event for the ISPS Handa Australian Open in Canberra with a round of 74, just two shots shy of qualification. Now that is one tough gal!

Reckon she could have found someone to suck it out if needed, but hey, a golf tee did the trick. Yep, one tough gal.
What is this golf game you talk of? |

Fair effort. Can she apply for a medical certificate ….
Handicap, I’m working on it. – Edit: Feb 2013 still, working on it. |

It’s actually the incorrect treatment for a Redback bite. Should be an icepack as for bee and other insect stings. I’m fairly sceptical that it was in fact a Redback that bit her, sounds very unusual circumstances and not typical at all for a Redback encounter.

Have to agree with you here as I thought it was a foolish thing to do.

Yeah just another media blowing things out of proportion. I saw a tweet saying she was bitten by a Black Widow, so??? Besides I doubt a small spider would produce enough venom that if you squeeze the bits clear liquid would come out Ridiculous…

Sticking a tee in your leg will do bugger all good anyway. The toxin will be travelling in the lymphatic vessels which are separate to the blood vessels. So the tee insertion will only promote bleeding to no avail (and as you say, possibly cause infection). Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a tumour in the whale story (ie urban legend)

The clear liquid would have been plasma from the bleeding she caused.

She might turn into Spiderwoman :-)

geez, listen to you guys letting facts get in the way of a good story. Though I did read the idea that she decided to stick a tee in her leg after being bitten by something potentially poisonous and shuddered after all of those primary school first aid lessons drumming it in never to do that!

Yeah, sorry about that. Anyway, what about the spider, nobody cares about that. Hope it’s alright.
