I remember Graeme McDowell hooking a routine fairway wood shot into the bushes at the Open last year too.

It’s good to see the world’s top golfers still pull out the odd atrocious shot to make us feel not quite so bad :-D

It can happen with a narrow stance, the swing axis (say the chin) moves towards the target with the COM. It is probably a swing fault that has been building for some time. It takes something like that to get your attention.
That shot may have been the wake up call to an impending swing fault and the reason he won when next up.

Jason Day did it early last year. Went about 35 metres.
He was stunned. Walked up to it, absolutly slaughtered driver of the deck. Went about 4 miles. Then he started giggling.

But seriously, why do pros concentrate on short game so much? Because they don’t hit every shot fecking perfect. Never have, never will. It’s just the select camera coverage that makes the numpties think that they do.
