What is a low, a mid, or a high handicapper?

The obvious answer, to me at least, is the A, B and C grade divisions. Which at my club at least are <=12, 13 to 19, and 20+.

I play off 14, and consider myself a mid capper. But some posts on the forum would suggest this is a high handicap. Others suggest the opposite.

Interested n views of what is high, mid and low..

Just a stab:

Low – less than 5

Lowish – 5 to 8

Mid – 9 to 18

Not so mid – 18 and above

I would have thought above about 2 handicap; but plus sound OK as well.

Don’t be fooled when you read lots of “gems” of advice from others on here. Some of them have a substantially higher handicap than you.

low hanidicappers only two putt twice a round and never lose a ball.

Mid handicappers only three putt twice around and lose a ball 3 times a round.

High handicappers use noodle golf balls.

I think anyone who considers 14 high is being a knob.

I think there might be another level of distinction – casual vs regular golfers.

Casual golfers like myself and my mates who maybe play 9 holes 2 out of 3 weeks, and 18 rarely, probably average scores around 95 – 110. We want to be better but don’t have the time or money to practise and play. Lessons are a bit pointless because of this. But we chop around because we love it.

Regular golfers who play 18 holes at least once a week probably average around 80 – 95. They have the time and money to practise and play, and possibly get the odd lesson too. And lessons have more benefit because they can practise what they learn!

everyone thinks they are better than they are, and will tell anyone they should be off less. 14 is a mid hcp, but if you regularly play with guys off 5-9, they will always tell you it is too high…...

you got the “can’t” bit right, but it’s pronounced “kiwi’

one things for sure, you have to look at things diffeently now than you did for the last 30 years.

I always considered anything below 5 to be a high quality golfer who could turn out a par round with reasonable regularity. That was when i was on 10. Now with the new system I’m on 4 and I certainly can’t turn out a par round regularly( I’ve had 1 in my life) and those golfers who used to be on 4 are now on scratch or better.

these days I would classify a talented golfer as 2 or less. 3 up to 8 would be a low marker, 9 to 15 a mid range golfer, 15 to 25 a high marker or burglar( in some cases) and above that a hacker.

In the past 12 months i have seen the following handicap reductions in my playing partners
1. 60 plus yr old who had never played off single figures before , now on 4
2. 60 yr old who played off 28-31 for 5 years , now on 19
3. player on 25 last july , now on 15 with very few changes to their game

Its certainly a different ball park to what most of us are used to.

What is the average handicap for a male player? Wasnt it something like 18 a few years ago but may now be a bit higher closer to 21?

If that is correct then we have a valid average to rate from.

That means 18 is not a high capper but average.

Anyone know the current average in Aus?

Average for officially handicapped golfers should be lower than total global average as chumps like me who shoot high don’t have time to be in a club so we’re not officially handicapped anywhere. Again, regular golfers should be lower capped, and us casual hackers should be higher which would pull the total average up if included

if a pecker pecked a peckled pecket, how many peckled peckets would a pecker peck?

0-8 = low marker
9-19 = mid hanicapper
20 plus = high marker
30 plus = take up lawn bowls, tenpin bowling, curling or give the token “I’m just glad to be out here” line
