Little debate at work

So I had a debate with the guys a work today and wanted to settle the score. One of my colleagues stated that he wanted a new driver with less loft so he could hit it straighter. I proceeded to tell him that he would want exactly the opposite. He said that a higher loft driver would spin more and therefore fade and draw more. I said, yes, it will impart more spin, but a higher loft will impart more backspin and thus less side spin resulting in a straighter shot. Am I correct? Cheers.

yes it depends on angle of attack too and resultant launch angle some can hit a 10.5 driver and it will launch the ball like 8.5 deg driver some can hit 9.5 deg driver that will launch like a 12.5 degree driver I will say this IF youre in doubt between lofts – go higher…..I hit a 10.5 further than ever….Low spin head with low spin shaft is the go why is 7 iron easier to hit than 5 iron….

You are correct. But if the guy is wanting to hit worm burners that bite the dust and run out, he might actually end up ‘straighter’ than if the ball flew the full distance.

More to the point, he should learn why he isn’t hitting them straight and cure the problem, rather than expecting that he can buy his game. Although all the advertising crap from the club manufacturers suggest than one can buy their way out of problems.

the lower the loft you go the more swing speed you need to get the ball to fly straight if pros are using 9.5 and 10.5 degree drivers then weekend mugs are mad for using 8.5 degree drivers trust me I used one for a whole too and thought it was a good driver till I found that a 10.5 driver I can draw and keep in play FIR stat is huge for me…I hit fairways I play ok
