I first met Karrie in her last year as an amateur up on South Molle Island, when she participated in the Annual Golf Week tournament. I was undertaking my apprenticeship as a greenkeeper at the time. Back then she was one of the most down to earth people you could meet. We took Karrie and he boyfriend at the time on a tour of the staff quarters and shared a beer or two. She won that event by a mile.
Reading this article, Karrie is still one not to get carried away with herself and is very humble in her achievements. She is one of the greats of Australian golf, male or female. It would be safe to say she has inspired both girls and boys to participate in this wonderfully frustrating, rewarding game.
I hope she wins this year and encourages more juniors to take up the game.
Good luck Karrie

Bring your daughter to the slaughterrrrrrrrrrr

Many ppl speak well of her but she always looks miserable when playing, does not smile much, having said that how would we cope with the rigor of pro golf.

I will break 90 this year.

It is NOT my age.

It is NOT for 9 holes.

Complete nonsense the 18th being listed as a par 5. It says a lot about women’s golf when they give them false results. Farcical if a professional golfer calls that a par 5.

Not a fan of the women’s game cabbageman? Feel the need to criticise it?. You gotta remember that in the womens game, some of the best players hit it just 210 – some hit it 280. All blokes hit it min 280..Watching play on tv today it seemed less than half the field could reach the 18th in 2 shots and that was coming in with a fairway wood! eg webb hit a good drive and then a 3 wood to the front edge! Don’t you watch men’s golf and notice that they can ALL reach the par 5’s and often with mid/short irons. Why should the women’s game be any different. Noone could reach the 12th at Royal Pines, only the real long hitters got to the 15th – so what are you on about.?? Mickleson 24 under after 3 rounds in Phoenix…. now that is farcical ! What would be your opinion if the women shot those sort of scores? course too easy for them? Winning score only 13 under par for 3 rounds tell s me the girls played a tough course this week.

Have you ever played Royal Pines? It is a pitch and putt course.

Thanks for the character assessment.

Women’s golf sucks, mainly due to the lack of strength. They hit it embarrassingly short, and their short games are restricted as well. They struggle to hold greens from 140m out.

How often do you see front pins in women’s golf? There is a reason for that.

Commentary at women’s events is always far less critical to the point of almost fawning over the players. They all know it is a crap product but do their best to pretend it is a worthwhile product.

Garbageman

Who really cares about the distance they hit it, they are all playing the same course and conditions.

I actually think they have a great product to sell. Some great young players coming through the ranks that could be on the cover of any magazine and can really play.

So many of the gals were hitting hybrids into many holes since course actually played a bit long at times. The still have to chip and putt like everyone else that plays the game.

Yeah. Those 320m par 4 holes are real long.

To say that they chip and putt like anyone else is nonsense. They simply cannot generate the clubhead speed to play the sort of shots that capture the imagination of the golfing public.

Are men not stronger than women ? Perhaps that explains why they hit it longer. Doesn’t mean the women are not skilled and enjoyable to watch. I am sure there would be more men watching womens golf than womens tennis.

Skilled? Sure.

Enjoyable to watch? I guess it is relative, but you would only watch it for the sake of watching golf.

IIRC there was an event in Victoria last year where both genders played a professional event and the women complained about the unfair hole locations because they can’t spin the ball as much.

The product is what it is. If you threw in 10 men from pro am level I would bet that at least 8 of them would finish in the top ten. There is a massive difference in the standard of product. It is just that the average viewer is duped by course set up and non-critical commentary.

Okay, CM, you assume that everyone in the “golfing public” has the same preference that you evidently do to see long hitting all of the time. Some may prefer that style of golf, but it is an entirely arbitrary assessment to say long hitting is a good product and shorter hitting is therefore crap.

One reason that Royal Pines played particularly long this weekend is that the fairways were still under water on Wednesday.

But you are right, the women don’t have the length that the men do. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy that style of golf – they hit a helluva lot longer than I do, but it is still much closer to the style of game that I play, so I find I get a lot out of watching the way that they go about it.

You don’t have to like that style of golf personally and nobody is forcing you to watch it. But yet you feel the need to come and pick a fight with people who do like it and do appreciate that style of game. That makes you a goose.

Nailed it in one Deege.

To my way of thinking …..... unless you can drive it 280m plus everytime…....... then you are probably better off watching the ladies golf, as that will be much more relatable to your own game.

I noted yesterday on a couple of the par 3’s that the girls were taking the same clubs off the tee that I probably would have chosen for the same distance.

Hit anything less than a driver anyway, man or woman, and its all a game of accuracy, and the ladies can certainly hold their own in that regard, as the ladies short games don’t suffer by comparison with the guys. Karrie’s chip in on the 14th comes to mind.

But I believe we have digressed slightly …........

Getting back to Ms Webb, and I really enjoy watching the way she plays the game, and her tenacity in getting the job done, and it was great to see her win her 8th title yesterday.

A great player, and a great ambassador for the game, and she is certainly right up there, in terms of the best golfer, male or female, that Australia has ever produced.

And that is the point. In every quality sport people pay money to watch the competitors do things that they cannot imagine doing for themselves.

People watch Dale Steyn bowl a ball because they can only dream of bowling at 150kph.

People watched Michael Jordan because they could only dream of dunking a ball like that.

People watch Lionel Messi because they can only dream of scoring goals like that.

The average Joe can watch any dill hit a ball 200m at any Saturday club comp.

Well worth discussion Cabbageman.

I laugh that you are apparently the Uber Troll, yet the only topics which seem to generate any discussion/debate are ones you have invited discussion on (or involve Keysborough golf club). The rest have about 3 responses on average.

I have no issue with calling the 18th a 4, or a 5. It simply does not matter because it plays what it plays. The best holes fit somewhere in between their official par score – driveable 4’s, shortish 5’s, etc are amoung my favourites to watch.

Couldn’t agree more on watching the women’s game though. Australia’s 2nd largest women’s tournament, and I was happy to catch the news highlights and hope that the amateur might get home. I’d have watched or gone to the equivalent mens event.

At least we can lay Webb at short odds next week at Royal Canberra. She only goes OK on pancake flat & slow greens these days IMO.

Royal Canberra will be interesting to see how they set it up. They might be torn here as they can trick it up quite easily due to the slope on many of the greens and the rough there can be quite sticky.

On the flip side this is a rare opportunity for the ACT to host anything so they want it to be as good a spectacle as possible.
