Canberra Australia Day

I am looking for some ideas for Courses to play in Canberra on Australia Day. Ideally would like a comp round and ideally in the morning. (Yeah I know it’s a lot to ask)

I don’t really know any golfers in Canberra so have not been able to get on with friends. I liked the look of Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club last time I was in Canberra for work but tried calling them and they advised as I am not a member there I can only call 2 days prior to see what is available. Whilst I understand they try to offer the best tee times to there own members I am really wanting to lock something in ASAP.

I am off 14 but do like playing challenging courses not straight up and down tracks.

Any ideas or suggestions on courses would be greatly appreciated.

Shame you can’t get onto Gungahlin Lakes – course that has been in good condition whenever I have played there, and great value for money.

Otherwise, Gold Creek and Yowani are worth a hit. Next on my list would be Magpies Belconnen.

I reckon you will get a morning game at Gungahlin if you take the chance to wait.

Gold Creek and Queanbeyan should be no worries, Yowani might be harder unless you can get in as a guest, but ring the manager you never know.

Try Murrumbidgee Golf Club ask for Scott tell him Gordon B from Wagga sent you he will look after you.
He is the Pro there.

ummm…correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Australia Day on a Saturday this year?
Any course in Canberra is going to be real tuff to get on, therefore.
If you want to play comp it will be REAL tuff.
If you want to play social, most courses will open a slot after the comp goes through (Federal, my club, for example will open social slots after 3.30pm or thereabouts)

I’d take Gold Creek over GG Lakes and Yowani any day. Plus they will let you book 2 weeks in advance. Give them a call.

Golf is not a game of perfect!

If you can organise (thru any means) a game at Federal or Yowani, I strongly suggest you do, Two great testing tracks.

GC & GGL are IMHO just more resort style layouts and usually presented in fair condition only. : ^)

Queanbeyan is also worth a try.

No your not wrong about the day of the week.

Its a long weekend, it won’t be that busy although Gungahlin will have their Australia Day Cup on (if they still run it). I am a former member of a couple of the clubs in town and I would be shocked if there isn’t a smattering of vacancies here and there on everyone’s timesheets for the day. Clubs like Royal, Federal and maybe Yowani won’t care about the holes, the other clubs will be happy to fill them.

Agree. My experience is that Australia Day is one of the easier weekends to get on. Half of Canberra will be at the coast.

I keep hitting ESCAPE but I’m still here

Thanks heaps to all who gave suggestions.

Yowani have Monthly Medal on (intersting weekend to play Monthly medal) so that ruled them out.

Federal have the same system as Gungahlin Lakes i call on the Thursday to get whats left for Saturday. I really wanted something locked in.

The fact that i did not know anyone that plays at Royal Canberra I think ruled that out. Would have loved a hit there just quietly looks like a great track.

Murrumbidge website would not load so i could not get contact details for them.

Queanbeyan seemed to get good raitings on the review page so gave them a call and they were more than helpful. He got me a early morning tee time on the saturday and they only charge comp fee no visitors green fees so it was a double win.

once again thanks to all those who offered suggestions

Don’t rule out Belconnen as a option either.

Since the new greenkeeper has taken over a few months ago the course has improved out of sight. He has done more to improve the course in that time than the other guy did in 6 years! He is the former 2IC at Federal so he knows what he’s doing.

The green have come along in leaps and bounds and the general condition of the course is very good. He has even toughened up the fairways in the sense that he now mows them with “shape”, so they are not just up and down like they used to be. Bunkers are still a bit hit and miss as are some of the tees but I know the new guy has them on his work plan

They have a online booking system but give the Proshop a ring on 02 6254 6740. You shouldn’t have any problems booking a game. They usuualy open up the sheets about 6 days before the day of play

Cheers StuGIV

will keep them in mind for next time I am there. The guy at Queanbeyan was very helpful so I will stick with him this time round. Hopefully the course is as good as some reviews i have read.

StuGIV, if the old 2IC from Federal is in charge, and improving things, the previous guy must have been a blind, drunk monkey!!!

Best thing Federal have ever done was to get rid of the incompetent super and his 2IC, the course has improved markedly in the 5 months they have not been there. Something to be said about not dumping gigalitres of water on the course every night.

Also, put a good system in place for auditing and stocktaking the use of chemicals…

PLUS ONE!!
massive effort in getting rid of the poa and presenting the course in a much better way
helps if you have a golfer at the business end of the course management group.

last bloke reminded me of that lovely (Monty Python??) line: This hospital would be perfectly good if it wasn’t for all the sick people (i.e. he did not play golf and did not appreciate criticism/commentary from the playing members)

The_Yub…where do you play? How do you have such intimate knowledge of Federal’s recent history?

You’ll enjoy Queanbeyan, great track (fairly tight) and awesome members there, one of whom happens to be me. Can’t hook up with you as I’m a 6 day member and can’t play Saturdays. Also will be away in Brissie for long weekend.
Enjoy your game.

When you post your golflink number its pretty easy for another member to track your name down, this especially so if your club has a miclub or micropower system

Haha! Yep, there’s no privacy with a Golflink number! My name’s Joseph, but you can call me Joe (7556). Nah, no Wednesday, work gets in the way for another 4 weeks!

thankfully no one has rubbished Queanbeyan yet so I still have high hopes for it.

Of course not, it’s only just behind Royal Canberra in quality and the members are far better people.
