“To protect the Integrity of the competion.” Give me a break! Why do golf clubs think that if a visitor has a good score, they are a Burglar. If a member has a good score, they must’ve played well that day? Just as much chance of a member manipulating their handicap as a visitor.

Where are you a member Bro? Would you think it was ok if I posted up this sort of burglary at your club? The gaul of some peasants astounds me….

I played as a visitor in a monthly medal (this was not an open event). Paid my visitors fee of $30.00 (3 times the members comp fee). I actually won the A grade nett of the day, picked up a $50.00 voucher plus got my name in the paper as the A grade nett winner of the monthly medal, however, the actual medal went to the A grade member with the next best nett & he picked up the runners up voucher of $30.00. This outcome is only fair & reasonable as it was not an open event.

Not so sure about that. If they have an official Golf Link handicap I agee but if it is a social group handicap I think the story could be different.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game! |
|
You have to have a golflink number to play in all of the comps I know of so social group handicap is irrelevant.

This issue came up a few years ago when several resort style courses were offerring official handicaps and you only had play about 3 rounds per year at that course to maintain it. There were some clubs that would not recognise some handicaps where these clubs were the home club and players whilst could still play as visitors they were essentially not eligible for any prizes, my experience was that they were infact informed before teeing off with an opt out of paying the comp fee. I did witness some very dubious golf and hadicaps at times, hence I would say why the TC members voted for the system they have. Having said that with Golf link now I would hope that this should eliminate that from happening, and all handicaps are or should be equal in todays climate. Its always nice to see your name in the paper, but to me the satisfaction lies in playing above or beyond your current level and over time getting that handicap down. I could never understand guys throwing out the anchor on the last few holes to protect a handicap. Bad form by the club if the situation was not explained to the visitor prior to hitting off, and bad form for the member not explining the situation to his guest. IMHO.

yep a board event or medal etc, should be excluded…..members only able to win it but normal comp, full paying guest, with full australian current golflink handicap = robbed. no exceptions
Thankyou Jesus…….., praise the lord. |

Any 20 handicapper having his day shooting 12 over for example would have many people questioning his handicap. But next week those same people would think 20 is too low for him if they had a chance to see him again. Unless Twin Creeks is aggressive in reassessing their own members and chopping their handicaps if needed, I see no reason why they would have any less burglars than any other club.

Australian handicaps don’t travel well between clubs—the very reason for introducing the new course rating system. But maybe 1 or 2 shots (unless as Razaar implied, Twin Creeks’ ACR is severely overrated and the visitor’s club severely underrated). It looks a selfish decision by the members. I enjoy when visitors have a chance to win our comps (which does what hAcKpRo suggested), because they’ll stick around in the club after, be the centre of (positive) attention, have a great time and we often see them back again where they don’t do so well.

It sound like something that the Members have voted on to boost egos. If you play in a comp anywhere you should be eligible to win. Based on the GMs comments if you play Twin Creeks and come 12th overall but are the highest placed visitor there will be a $50 voucher waiting for you in the pro shop as you would have won the separate visitors comp. I however doubt this would be the case. If you let visitors play in the comp they need to be eligible to win it plain and simple.

That was quite magnanimous of them , i take it was in Melbourne. Im surprised given the medal is part of a 12 month series, oh well, alls well that ends well

I’m a member of Howlong GC, Iron mick…..and what’s wrong with me asking Kiwi what club he’s from? I’m a fellow kiwi myself, hence my name Bro. If Kiwi was around the local area I’m at, I’d see if the brother wanted to hook up for a round…

Except for smokers, surely?
What is this golf game you talk of? |

I have to agree with the idea of guests being able to win any comp they enter excluding board events or monthly medal…... But they should be recognised if they win best gross or net for the day at presentation time and if it is a medal or board event it should be made clear of the requirements to win, they have to be a member of the club not a visitor. If not then in theory 12 guests could win the monthly medal over the 12 months and there may be no one to contest the medal of medals

You were robbed and that the TC rule is crap… even for Kiwi’s. The bloke that was posted as the winner in the paper finished 2nd.

So who won the following comps of the day: -My wife is going to divorce me because I racked off to play comp this morning. -the “I can’t believe how well I’ve played today after having no sleep” division. -”do you think my mate will mind me doing his bird last night” division. -”I’m not a member anywhere and have a dodgy travelling handicap” award. -”I did the biggest crap before I teed off” cup, List could go on. C’mon Twin Creeks….get serious

‘Only in Queensland’? Twin Creeks is on the outskirts of Sydney. You need to get out more…or buy a map

Open comp means Open to all members of any club with an AGU H’cap. If there is a separate comp for visitors it ain’t an Open event. Winner winner chicken dinner…you was robbed!

I used to be a member of a club that only had a bloke’s competition on Saturday. When I joined, I clarified that if I was going to pay for a 7 day membership, I wanted to be sure I would be allowed to play in the comp and they assured me that it would be no problem. Then after about a year of me playing in the comp and paying my fee every saturday, we had the two round winter cup playing stroke. I did really well and on the basis of the scores reported was up to win the nett overall, plus my grade. The other members I knew were very congratulatory and I was stoked. However the next week the announcements of the winners didn’t feature me at all. I asked the comp manager who gave me back my entry fee (for the second round only) and said that as I was a woman I wasn’t eligible. It seemed obvious that this had become policy only when it turned out I had won, and that they were perfectly happy for me to pay my seven day membership as long as they got to pick and choose which events I was eligible to play based on where I finished. I understand that people don’t always think things through, but I never got a genuine apology or had anyone discuss the new rules with me, and my husband and I both decided not to renew our membership (not just because of that, but it was a pretty big factor at the time when deciding whether to continue with a commitment which was a stretch for us at the time).

Wasabi, it is a fairly standard situation at golf clubs – most of them (including mine) still have the “Club Champion” and the “Ladies’ Club Champion” and the main committee which manages the club generally, and the women’s committee that manages the women’s comps. In the case above, the Winter Cup was an event which would have warranted my name going on the board, and that was the tipping point at the time (this was admittedly 10 years ago).
