Hi all,

we are looking at playing 4 or 5 rounds of golf in Malaysia in June/July this year, predominantly around KL.

Last year we did a Phuket golf trip and pre-booked the tee times and transfers with a local company, there were lots to choose from. It was great, I know we paid more, but I don’t mind paying for the convenience.

Anyone had any experience using a local agent to make arrangements and have a recommendation?

What’s it cost to play golf in Malaysia? I’m heading to KL in May so would be interested to know. Guessing it won’t be cheap but gotta love our 3-1 exchange rate.

i dont think there is much on offer actually in KL itself. There is only one course in the city from memory. You may have to travel a bit to find more courses

I played at the country club when i was there a few years back, was pretty decent, fair way out of town , had to catch a train back as my mate split straight to airport

Royal Selangor GC is in KL.(About 5 minutes from the city) It’s about 500 Ringgits to play, which is almost $170 Australian. It has 2 or 3 different courses. KL country club ,which has an East and West course and they play a European Tour event is about half an hour out of town and at least the same price, if not dearer.

Golf is one of the few things that is expensive in KL. GolfAsian.com will organise a tour for you with transfers etc. but they will charge even more.

I went to KL and Vietnam last year and purely for cost reasons only played golf in Vietnam.

Yeah there are quite a lot of good courses within an hour of KL, which is why I want the transfers included.

Cavo is right about it not being cheap for a good golf course and he has certainly highlighted 2 of the most expensive courses in his post. It is obvious however that to play in Malaysia is not as cheap as it once was. Thanks for the Golfasian lead!

My dilemma is that we could go somewhere like Vietnam or Northern Thailand where the golf is a lot cheaper, but the increase in airfare cost from Perth actually makes the total trip more expensive. We can get to KL & back for just over $400 each from Perth!

Originally we were going to do the Hunter Valley, but the higher accomodation & airfare costs make it a lot more expensive than SEA.

Why don’t you fly to Singapore and take a ferry to Bintan or Batam in Indonesia? These islands are less than an hour ferry from Singapore.

I have played 2 Batam courses, and they were OK, but Bintan by all accounts has some beautiful courses.

If you can fly to KL each for $400 it shouldn’t cost you much more to fly to Danang (Vietnam). Then go to Hoi Anh. The extra money on airfares you would save on accom and expenses. KL is about half the price of Oz but Vietnam is 5 to 10 times cheaper then here.

2 great courses just outside Hoi Anh, Montgomery Links and Danang Country club (A Greg Norman course) They are side by side. You don’t need to worry about about transfers or tours, just jump in a cab and it costs you about 4 bucks to go the 20 km’s. Golf’s too dear for the locals so you never have any trouble getting on or getting a good deal. (I got 2 rounds at Montgomery Links for $110 US)

Personally, I found Hoi Anh a much nicer place then KL. Lots more to see and do when you are not playing golf. Great food and friendly people.

there is/are always the course/s in the Genting Highlands
not toooo far away, pretty easy to get to…and a lot cooler & less humid (and with accommodation/casino/resort too)
There are at least 5 courses within 45minutes of KL so if you have the ready $$ you should have a good time.

Nor Relentless, just speaking from experience. Good choice. I know I sound like the travel ambassador for Vietnam, but I loved the place. A few tips, when in Ho Chi Minh make sure you do a tour of the Mekon Delta, great day. In Hoi Anh, leave yourself a little luggage room and fill up on your golfing clothes and in Hanoi go to some of the corner bars for some 20 cent beers.

Don’t change your currency before you go, just take Aussie dollars, you can get in changed at nearly all the Hotels and you get a much better rate then American dollars.

I’m actually in Hoi An, Vietnam at the moment and checking both courses out while my wife and I are here on holiday.

My second time in Hoi An and it would be a great place for a holiday, let alone a golf holiday. Convincing the wife of that idea right now.

Weather is about 29 degrees and not too much humidity.

Monsoon season starts in September till January.

Great to hear the weather is good, ill be there in 3 weeks. Playing both Monty and DaNang courses. There is a new Nick Faldo course open, but it is to the north of Da Nang, a little too far away from Hoi An. My dad told me the pro at either Montgomerie or Da Nang is from Kilmore, just north of Melbourne too.

In KL, I enjoyed playing Saujana, has been an Open Championship qualifiying course, and is a great track. There is KLGC, Tropicana or Royal Selangor too. Plenty to choose from. I have played Glenmarie at dusk with the lights on, is pretty cool. If your willing to head out of KL, I also like Bukit Tingi, not far from the Gentinge Highlands, is cut right out of a rainforrest and is spectacular.

If anyone can spare it, The Mines in KL is almost $500 australian to play. Its where the US PGA Tour event is held.

KLCC cost me M$420.00 2 yrs ago with a member intro. plus tips for the caddy. I wonder whether you can get a game there without a member’s intro.

I’m off to Malaysia soon for a family wedding and my cousin’s husband is apparently a member of Bukit Jalil Golf Club & Rahman Putra Golf Club. Anyone played them before? I have zero idea of location or what to expect overall, but there’s a whole lot of water at both courses. That should be fun with borrowed clubs! (flying tightarse airlines so no taking my own clubs). Better take lots of balls. Maybe a snorkel and flippers too.
