Would love to hear from the Yering Meadows members especially in regard to current course condition and how the course fared winter just gone. Does it really blow non-stop and how big an issue is fog? Are balls holding greens better these days? Rough still penal / lost balls? From A-grader’s perspective degree of difficulty once course has been played numerous times? Lastly, members demographic – plenty of 30-40 year old golfers?

I play there a bit.
Rough is definantly not as penal as it used to be. Been cut back a lot.
It blows a bit more than most other courses, but that is because it is very exposed up the valley

Fog can be a pain in the arse, but not mind boggling.

Greens are pretty good. Receptive enough

It was very wet during winter, but still playable.

Im not an A grader, the course is still tough. Jarrod Lyall has the course record of 66. Draw your own conclusions.

I play here a couple of times per week, and as an A grader I think the course isn’t that hard really. The more times you play the more you learn the way around. Basically get your tee shot in play and you’re set.
Only a couple of times has the field been delayed due to fog. I don’t really think it is an issue.
The issue of the rough – it kinda annoys me that it’s been cut back. It seems to detract from the strategy of some holes. There are some holes I don’t even aim for the fairway anymore because there is no advantage unless you’re going for the green in two (talking par fives here)
The course got pretty wet over winter, but with the winter we had I wasn’t surprised. Only closed for a couple of days total I believe.

Thanks for the summary Thereabouts. Played it recently and did notice the Par 5s played really short with the summer run, more so on the Homestead (holes 19-27) where the course conditioning was still a bit raw. In time I think they’ll get the rough just right. But it’s definitely an impressive course. Love the short Par 4s on 1-18. Loved the Par 3s. I think the many water features make the course and add to strategic shot selection. Greens are good-sized and I enjoyed putting on them, but I do hope the committee is stressing the importance of the pitch-mark repairer to both members and social players.

The short par fours are definitely a strength. 14,15,16 is the best 3hole stretch on the course in my opinion.
And the committee is probably doing all they can about pitch marks. A lot of the time the greens are first class. But we have had a lot of corporate/social groups come through this summer. And I think there is a strong correlation between hosting those groups and having a lot of unrepaired pitch marks. But we need to have these corporates for cash so we do our best.

I played the “Nursery” course last Monday (25th). Not having played it before I wasn’t too disappointed. The other times I have had the opportunity to play there, in previous years, it has been during the wet season.

Obviously the fairway were lush and “bouncy”. The greens had been getting a light sand, while we were playing, but they weren’t too slow…..in fact putting down hill they were quite quick.

The temp on Monday was about 38 degrees with little wind. Some guys said that it was the hottest day they have ever played and we lost two guys during the round, who pulled the pin.

Having played at Sanctuary Lakes the day before I found the courses to be quite similar and I’m sure I’ll go back again.
