Alpine holiday advice

Well I shall not be returning to my beloved Queensland this year. We have decided to spend some time in the Alpine region of Victoria next month. As we are really up for ,some peace and quiet, I was wondering if anyone can recommend any secluded rental cottages in the area. We will be playing golf. Somewhere around Bright or Mt Beauty would be fine, but open to all suggestions. Advice on courses would also be welcome. Thanks. Alan

Bright is a beautiful spot to stay chin, in the past weve either gone there in Autumn or spring, will be damned hot in Feb…we stayed in westwood Lodge a few years back, no complaints, quaint little place in beautiful garden setting and walking distance to main drag and pub. Top choice

Thanks for the advice wasabipea, I’ll look into it. Have a good weekend

Have a look at the ” Best country courses / Hidden gems ” thread in “Your favourite courses” section mate.
I posted about Bright golf course, it is worth a look .

Thanks Swinger, very informative. Have a good day!

Alan,

Myrtleford’s a nice little country track as well, complete with honesty box, and is usually really quiet …. about 15 mins from Bright.

While it Bright also check out Simone’s restaurant in the main street …... the best Italian food going around.

Simone and her hubby George used to run the Oven’s and Murray Motel just outside of town, but the attached restaurant really took off, hence them selling up and going into the restaurant business full time. If you like traditional Italian, you won’t find any better.

I used to go up there and stay for a week, a few times per year thru work …... bloody great area of the country. Also, if you’re into wine …...... Brown Brothers is just down the road in Milawa.

Hi GPJ

Thanks for your time. Will definitely put the restaurant on my list, love Italian food and after 18 moths of near solid chinese food Very ready for a change. Thanks Alan

Have a look at the King Valley as well. Some nice accomodation, pretty spot and no where near as commercialised. Top class meals in the restaurant half of the pub at Whitfield. Really good wineries as well. Still close enough to Myrtleford and Bright for a day trip. I’d avoid Brown Bros as overpriced and bland (generally) and crazy busy.

Hang on , now we are talking beer not golf courses.

Ok , as a long time home brewer and a self promoted expert in boutique beer establishments you have to travel a few extra miles to Beechworth to taste the best beers in that area .

Beechworth’s Tanswells hotel and the brewery behind the pub has the best beers by far in the King Valley and Bright.

Bridge road brewery in Beechworth has some of the best beers I have tasted , not cheap , as a matter of fact quite exxy , but try the Indian Pale Ale , “at around $8 for a 10ml glass” , it was worth it.

As for Wineries try Gapsted winery on the Great Alpine Rd a few miles out of Myrtleford .

Happy drinking mate.

Give me a man with big hands big feet and no brains and I will make a golfer out of him .
