What’s the etiquette on this? Should you carry on playing the full 18 and be a cheerleader…or is it ok to quit after 9?
I’ve never done it myself – I embrace my shame after having a Bo Derek or two and have lifted the bat a few times on medal day. But it occurred to me if you do knock 3 in a row OB do you just call it quits or what? there’s gotta be a limit to your partner’s patience doesn’t there?

Stay or go, whatever tickles your fancy. It isn’t open heart surgery so noone will drop dead if you walk out in the middle.

If that bothers anyone in your group then I’m sure they’ll bitch about you back in the cluhhouse : )

This space for rent.

I know a club member that recently had 31 shots on a 136 metre par 3 during a medal day. He hit his second shot into the front trap and eventually two putted for a 31. He set a new record for club competition and would never have considered pulling out of the round.
Jon…

I get the idea that it is poor form not to finish and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever not finished either despite some shocking holes but sometimes if a guy is 40 over par already (well maybe not 40 over but you get my drift) and is going back to the tee 2 times and there are two groups waiting on the tee grinding their teeth and his playing partners are kind of getting over it, then that’s kind of pathetic too don’t you think??

A player shouldnt be walking back in a stroke event, that really gives me the #$%$@#, I mean hello, if you hit it into the amazon then FFS, play a prov, its that easy, walk to bag, announce it, Im playing a prov…Players that walk back time after time, fair dinkum have some respect there’s other players on the course

But why would anyone go back to the tee twice?
Surely you’d wipe the hole and move on??

…..

I’m talking about in a stroke event – no wipes

Pretty ordinary to pull out under any circumstances, I’v given up plenty of times after 9 holes so instead I just play the back 9 different, just experiment with shots I wouldn’t normally play and gain some experience.

If your playing in a foursome wouldn’t everyone have to get new scorecards if one pulls out? Everyone’s marker will change.

People do all the time… what if your provisional goes in the shite or if its a blind tee shot or something. Its not always that straightforward especially off the tips at some courses…

V.C

In stroke and being a monthly medal which is 99% stroke play

you just cant wipe the hole you must play out the hole until completed

if that means you have to walk back twice to the tee so be it…

most people would hit provisional to save walking back but then their is others that have to walk up look for the ball to find it oob then go back to the last position of play

if it was stableford or Par V.C you would most likely take a wipe if no points was salvagable

you can hit more then 1 provisional ball i believe

the same result if you oob twice you have to make the walk back twice

so if 2 balls go oob then ya will be hitting a third ball from the tee anyway

keep hitting provisionals until you can actually SEE one in play…then start looking. I played with a bloke over in Esperance a couple of years ago, who hit 9 balls from a tee with a long water carry to the fairway. We didn’t see any of the balls land in water because there are a lot of trees on the edge but he wasn’t moving until he actually saw one land on the fairway. Lucky for him his very 1st ball was one foot from the water and he salvaged bogey.

Consultancy….if you’re not part of the solution, there’s big bucks to be made prolonging the problem.

Thanks OZ.

It’s only ever happened to me once and that was stableford at the one club challenge.
Hooked (pulled) a ball on the 10th and I never thought it was going OOB.

I got down the hill, found it, looked up the heill and saw a group on the tee.

Wipe.

Usually I’d hit a provisional.

Give that bloke a bloody medal, thats the spirit, fair dinkum, ive seen players walk back on the first at my track a straight up and down par 4 , some moderate tree lines…if its stroke…Provs all the way

One of our members had a 20 on a par four on Saturday medal round. I hit two provisionals twice on Saturday, just suck it up and play by the rules

No need for new cards. The player that leaves signs the card up to the point where he left and the 3 players remaining do a reshuffle so a new marker can sign for the rest of the holes.

I hit 3 provisionals at Beastwood on Saturday on the one hole. They were both my 2nd shot.
Didn’t find the first 2 bastards

How on earth would he know which one was in play – write a number on each one as he teed em up?

A mate was telling me of a round the other day of a social round at the Schanck. The index 1 Par 4 on the back (15th??) and he kept hitting balls until he was sure one was in play. Would have been playing 15 off the tee I think… Found the 2nd ball and got a double.

But that’s what I’m talkin’ about…

Never broken 36pts in an OOM… seriously.

most balls have numbers already on them

so what i would usually do if i am going to be using the same type of ball

is either mark OZ on my ball with orange texta as my main ball my second is done in blue OZ

or

if same brand of ball and make of ball i may use a different number ball

however though if i have to hit more then 1 or 2 provisionals i’ll probably just use an old crappy ball in the bag and mark it with OZ on the ball

plenty of ways you can distinguish what ball is what

not to long back i quit after playing about 12 holes .. there were 5 of us playing as a 5 ball in pretty much the last group, the 4 other guys had carts and there were no carts remaining, during the round after teeing off they all just took off down the fairway ..played their shots and then sat there waiting for me to catch up.. didn’t take much notice at first but after a few holes i started to get a bit narked as i felt i was being rushed.

i mentioned it to them but they just thought it was funny and continued on, so after the 12 hole i handed over the score card and made my way back to the bar and waited.. not a word was mentioned upon their return.

ok i wasnt playing badly but i did walk off the course as i thought that was pretty piss poor of them, they didnt really care as they still had a 4 ball but talk about lack of consideration !!!.

Unbelievable there where 5 of u playing in a 5 ball haha
Nothing worse then playing inconsiderate in carts I hear u on that one.

Playing with inconsiderate people in carts I meant

Hitting 9 off the tee. That would make the 9th ball his 17th shot. The idea of hitting provisionals is solely to save time. Hitting 8 provisionals off the tee. Over a Water Hazard also. Is to my mind not saving any time.
Apart from which ,if there was nowhere but the hazard for his ball to be lost. the 9th ball would be the ball in play anyway.

mate if i hit my 9th shot off the tee it would be worth playing on as i wouldnt have any clubs left in my bag ..lol

Very inconsiderate of them, Welly.

I’ve seen many occasions where a player NCRs on a lost ball or buggared hole, rather than go back and replay. They still play out the remaining holes, but it’s still a NCR.
