DQ-ing your self on medal day after a shocker hole

What’s the etiquette on this? Should you carry on playing the full 18 and be a cheerleader…or is it ok to quit after 9?
I’ve never done it myself – I embrace my shame after having a Bo Derek or two and have lifted the bat a few times on medal day. But it occurred to me if you do knock 3 in a row OB do you just call it quits or what? there’s gotta be a limit to your partner’s patience doesn’t there?

No. Play the round out. Your partners can wait.

Never broken 36pts in an OOM… seriously.

Rounds would be farcical if we all “quit” after a horror hole. Play it out, get something out of the day and learn from it.

There’s many a slip ’tween a cup and a lip.

Once had a guy apologise and pull out after a horror 9, but he put his clubs in the car and walked the second 9 tending flags, searching for balls and raking bunkers for us. I thought that was very classy.

Socks are for your feet, silly.

That is extraordinarily classy.
Most impressive
Not a chance in hell I could put myself through that.

Interesting topic. I believe you play on but continue in the same mode as to not distract your playing partners. By pulling out you create a 2 or a 3 in the field and this might prove a hindrance to the group, or especially to a player who is having a top round.

Low markers pulling out is another matter !!

Ladies dq themselves all the time but continue playing, taking their honor etc. I questioned one once as she insisted it was her turn off the tee and reminded her she had picked up her ball earlier and she was outraged! Apparently they believe they can continue same as no dq after picking up….out of my league.

I agree I would probably play on but declare I am DQing myself and “wipe” the hole but only after a real shocker like 3 obs and a second walk back to the tee or something really time consuming and embarrassing like that. What happens if a pro gets DQ’d during a round or doesn’t that happen? I’m guessing they shake hands and walk off?

It’s a hard one. Recently I shanked myself through my initial two holes of a comp. Wiped both. Lost 3 balls in the two holes. I didn’t know what was happening only that something was wrong.

The thought struck me about what to do if I kept going with the shanks, wiping holes and losing balls. There wouldn’t have been a point really …

I have said a few times stuff this im not playing the back nine but i always do play on and nine times out of ten play better on the back nine i feel better for it.. Now what about playing the 18 and not handing in your card is that as bad as walking off ?

I guess it is really your business if you ‘tear’ up the card and fail to lodge. In these days of GolfLink, and apparantly no privacy act considerations, some players cannot face the embarrasment of having a crap score on their record.
Today there is no protection of handicap but under the ‘old’ system a lot of cards were not handed in.

The Pro’s do walk off…. must be a PGA type local rule.

I will confess to a 13 on a par 5 on my last stroke round. I was travelling nicely at one over after 13 when the brain fade came along.

I briefly considered picking up but carried on with a near eagle 2 on the next and a steady finish to the round for an 82 gross/ 77 nett.

You never know what’s going to happen in golf which is all part of the fun!

It’s just a game……………isn’t it?

Reminds me of a stroke round some years ago when a low marker took 10 on the par 5 16th only to follow up with an albatross on the next hole (also a par 5).
As you said ’ you just never know’ !!

Agree. What ever happened to perserverance, tenacity?
Golf is one of the few sports where you never know what is around the corner, I have a bad day, I remember an editorial in a golf mag about an English soldier who hit four OBs of the first tee and went on to win the comp with a myriad of birdies…TENACITY. Life doesn’t let you run away from the bad things, you’ll have to face them now or later. Golf is the same.

To quit is not manly.

how is it another matter? thats totall dribble out ya behind stuff

are they just a special breed

if the low marker is allowed to walk of why cant the high marker

no difference at all wether you are a low marker or a high marker

just becuase a low marker may blow his handicap out after a few holes there day is gone is no excuse

@all

I Can remember a day i was playing ballarat golf course with Smergan i was having a bad day i piped up and said to smergs i am NCR’ING and smergan turned to me and didnt hesitate to say to me no ya not ya going to soldier on and play it out like a man

I thank him for having the balls to say to me what he did that day , the thing is i continued on and i am glad i did and i actually learned something from that day

My attitude towards the game is now different becuase of that and i feel i have cheated myself if i havent completed a comp round wether it be stroke par or stableforde

I also think iyou show poor sportsmanship by walking of or puling a NCR or deliberately DQ’ing oneself unless there is an unforseen emergancy like illness, death in the family or wife has just totalled the car but just cos ya hit a few balls oob or in the water this doesnt classify a good reason as to NCR or DQ’ing

however that is just my opinion what others wish to do is there business,,

if you think it is fair on yaself and your handicap then why not rip the card walk off ya only cheating yaself ya not cheating me

sure ya handicap might get better if you only hand your better scores in.

but is that a true reflection on where your handicap is or should be

The fact is we all have good games and we all have bad games

just be fair to yaself and your handicap

I dont reckon a player would garner much respect from his partners in doing this. The only exception if an injury was sustained. everyone has a had dead set shocker, it’s golf, move on and try and salvage something from the remainder of the card. If my scores shot for the day, I try a couple of different things on the run home, even open the shoulders up and monster some drives. In 18 holes theres always something a player can take from the round

Always seems to be a few NR’s at my club during the monthly medal, but no one actually leaves the course. There is always a fierce little competition between the 4 golfers involving a few bucks so no one is ALLOWED to walk off. Last Sat in a field of about 110 I know of 8 NR’s….could quite easily have been more. A lot of it is to do with only playing 1 provisional saying “stuff it, we’ll find one of ‘em” and then after finding neither they just can’t be bothered walking back.

Consultancy….if you’re not part of the solution, there’s big bucks to be made prolonging the problem.

Remember it well big fella. And yes, you were hitting it like a spud early on. Caught some unlucky breaks too if I recall.

Either way, you dug deep and played some decent golf on the way in.

And I agree with your conditions of NCR’ing as well. If you start, you finish. The bad days just make the good days better.

Suck it up and play on and use the remaining holes to figure out what’s be going wrong. As long as you’re not slowing your group down it won’t be an issue.

Hate to rip your card up then have a HIO. Always play on.

I have had some embarrasingly bad rounds lately.
Have not ever seriously thought about calling it a day.
To me, its just pathetic.

Have played with a few guys who canned it. Never played eith them again

I would never not put a card in either. That is just as low as walking off.

I get the idea that it is poor form not to finish and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever not finished either despite some shocking holes but sometimes if a guy is 40 over par already (well maybe not 40 over but you get my drift) and is going back to the tee 2 times and there are two groups waiting on the tee grinding their teeth and his playing partners are kind of getting over it, then that’s kind of pathetic too don’t you think??

Billy Dunk is my hero…

But why would anyone go back to the tee twice?
Surely you’d wipe the hole and move on??
