Be careful Chinaalan you will be accused of being an old angry chopper.
I will break 90 this year. It is NOT my age. It is NOT for 9 holes. I demand to be reinstated as reserve moderator(unofficial) |

Neither of us has said that. Please stop making things up.

Oh no anything but that !! How would I ever handle it!!

We had 30+ kids under the age of 10 at our weekly kids clinic yesterday and everyone one of them was dressed correctly. If they can do it then no reason adults can’t follow suit.

logical, sensible, up to date and relevant dress codes. chinaalan, how are you going to get everyone to agree on what this means without saying what you can and cannot wear? Where are you going to draw the line?

I mentioned earlier that defining unambiguous dress standards is not easy. But there are better ways than requiring specific styles that will soon be out of fashion, or forbidding items that then come into general acceptability in the community. Listing extremes like singlets and thongs then leaves it open for styles that don’t miss that by much thus gaining status of ‘must be ok then’. I wonder how well ‘bogan attire not allowed’ would work?

More importantly, behaviour standards should be specified. But again, difficult to define. Behaviour is a question of self respect and self discipline, something that many golfers seem to lack. Yet there’s no way of enforcing that as they walk through the pro shop. Oh well, you can only try.

Our club operates at a public golf course – and they’ll happily take anybody’s money. Our club has dress standards, but they aren’t very restrictive.

i think a few people are missing the point , look at the big picture, its not about the now its about the future those that love golf are going to do everything that a golf course / club demands those people are not going anywhere if you are a member at RM you are not going to go out and play in jeans , how ever these are the same people that have seen the game they love fall off free to air tv and banished to the back of the sports section unless tiger is out here. no one on the forum is saying lets make it a free for all but dont demand i buy/.change my sock because they have a logo on them or are 1cm too short , or there are too many pockets on my shorts (which come in handy for tees , markers ect) its about changing with the times and keeping yourself relevent when competing for kids attention

This right here in a nutshell. Most of my mates that don’t play think golfers look dorky and its hard to shed the “it’s an old man’s game” mentality when we dress as such. I guess this thread is asking the question about the relevancy of archaic dress codes and not one of whether we should or shouldn’t adhere to it.

Actually, those Sub 70s and Loudmouths are dorky to those not in the know.

Archaic dress codes?
Have you come here to play Jesus, with the leopards in your head |

Should have referenced the earlier posts regarding the need for long socks and such at some of the more conservative clubs. Once again I don’t have a problem wearing the required polo and shorts, its just asking the question about whether or not updating the dress code may be in order, maybe to raise its profile?

Here here…...it all comes down to attitude! You guys that whinge about not being able to wear cargos just don’t get it. There is an etiquette to golf which involves way more then just hitting the ball. Why do you think the pro’s where pants in tournaments irrespective of the weather? And for those that believe golf isn’t popular any more because of dress code has their hand on it…...seriously. For you guys that believe its sweet to wear cargos don’t say you wouldn’t dress appropriately if you weren’t handed a membership at RM or NSW straight in on the basis that you adhere to the dress code…...it’s all about attitude…...plus you look like cooks

Ah … the gold old days.

Here here……it all comes down to attitude! But do you think the pro’s would rather be wearing shorts on a stinkin’ hot day? Or at least be given the opportunity to? They wear pants because they have to, not necessarily because they believe in the tradition of the dress code. I reckon on a 40 degree day, stomping round in long strides for 5 hours in the middle of the day, some pros would be cursing the rule that says they must wear long pants. Much like a lot of the discussion already on here, the pro’s, like the rest of us will wear what is required of them.

I have to agree, I played in many pro ams in the UK and the professional who we played with always remarked that he would love to wear shorts when its stinking hot.

You’re right, I’d much prefer this… notreally

Well thats a step way to far! Shorts are ok but you have to wear the correct polo shirt and tucked in please. No one would like to see what you have just added above especially at their club. There has to be a happy medium to facilitate everybody, but a total disregard to the dress code is totally unacceptable.

But people are asking for a relaxing of the rules…that’s what ‘relaxing’ looks like.

Yes you have a point there, I may have to give in here as there is nothing worse than seeing golfers dressed unfit for the course. You see it way too often nowadays unless you’re at a very private golf club. Golf has its traditions and its what makes it the game it is today, further development for juniors is what needs to change as if we don’t try to compete with all the other sports out here we will see a massive decrease in numbers playing which will hurt the industry far more than its dress problem.

Agreed, and that’s where manufacturers like Puma, Sligo, Cross and to some extent Loudmouth have been good in trying to bring a bit of youthful exuberance to the game. That’s the great thing about golf that yes we have dress codes, but that doesn’t stop you showing a bit of personality.
