Questioning the status quo and its merits is very different to just whinging and complaining. Where’s the progress if we just accept things as customary?

Based on the acceptance of the rules by the majority of golfers it’s fair to say that at the moment people are happy with it all how it is for now.

If you want to play at the club, obey the rules.

Rob, as I said I don’t have a problem obeying the rules, you want to play there then abide by the rules or get them changed. .....it’s the logic of the rules in the first place that I question.

“It’s a game of bloody golf”…….precisely!!!....so why do we have these stupid @#$% attire rules?

You obviously don’t understand the game of golf……are you one of those blokes who stand on the driving range blazing away hitting driver thinking its about connecting one flush in front of your mates? Or hitting up on the group in front for a laugh?

Golf is not just about getting the ball into the hole in the least number of shots…..it’s the only game around where one penalises themselves against a set of rules in an “honour based” system. Like the “honour” system off the tee, attire/dress standards are part of the tradition of the game. You don’t see good players turning up to events dressed like “non golfers”. Golf is the whole package. If you’re reading this and find it funny, just get back to the range and blast away.</P>

Golf is about tradition. Cargo shorts and the like are a dead give away…….

No I don’t find this diatribe funny at all. I find it very sad and extremely insulting. You don’t know me from a bar of soap and to extrapolate from my questioning of attire standards to being a guy who hits up on the group in front for fun is bizarre in the extreme.

Golf dress standards have changed and will continue to change and I am sure some one as equally bigotted as you wrote the same sort of rubbish when someone suggested doing away with starched collars and collar studs! If you are reading this then I suggest you put on your plus fours and get back to the bottle. Waffle like this is a dead give away!

I’ll make two assumptions based on your response. 1/ you either haven’t been playing the game for long and/or 2/ you’ve never played at a private golf club.

You see with that attitude and wearing cargo pants you wouldn’t get as far as making it out of the pro shop when checking in for your round at a decent course wearing cargo’s. I didn’t invent the rule but that’s the deal-sorry to tell you how it is.

At some courses they even whinge about ankle high sock length…..the short ones vs the slightly long ones…..you have two options……..embrace it and dress accordingly or carry on like a pork chop believing the game owes you something and you can rock up in whatever……..the muny is awaiting.

Oh what a clever person you are to make such far reaching assumptions regarding a person, based purely on a few lines in an internet forum. Sadly however you are wrong on both counts. I have been playing long enough to be off a ten handicap and have played in private clubs in the USA, UK, Australia and all over Asia. I am actually a member of a private club here in China and two in the Philippines.

I might make a reasonably valid observation that you either cannot read or have a severe “comprehension” problem. Had you bothered to read my initial posting you would have seen that I have no problems in complying with dress rules, I am merely questioning the logic behind them and whether they are still relevant or changes should be made. I personally feel that in many cases they should be relaxed.

You seem to have a penchant for “talking down” to people and I find your comment regarding Munies a little strange after your previous tirade on honor of the game etc. Are you saying anything goes there and that munies are not real golf courses? I have played at some excellent munies with great people. Not everyone can afford private clubs.

Oh by the way I don’t wear cargo shorts when I play golf and wouldn’t even if the riles allowed, but I don’t see why anyone else shouldn’t ( if the rules were changed)

Acceptance does not necessarily mean agreement or happiness to continue to operate under those conditions.

A club’s Rules say adhere to our charter or you will not play. You want to play, you must accept the rules. We are talking in here about the possibility of relaxing some of these dress codes, to bring a more current perspective and interpretation of what would constitute acceptable attire.

When I first joined a club, it was pointed out to me one day that my black socks, which matched my black golf shoes, did not conform and that the Member’s Handbook stated socks had to be “long or white”.

In due course, I was on the committee and raised the matter at a meeting where it was quickly passed over as not worthy of discussion. So, when doing the next year’s syllabus and handbook, I simply deleted the paragraph. No-one noticed.

Good man.

With you on this one Alan. As was established in Nuremberg many years ago, lex injusta non est lex (“an unjust law is not law at all”).

Alan isn’t suggesting dressing like a slob, just that people are sensible about this. Also, I can understand the rules being a bit more strict in a clubhouse (especially one with some history), but on the course it makes no difference if someone is wearing socks. I see plenty of plonkers out and about who are perfectly dressed but still don’t care for repairing pitchmarks, which is a far greater slight on the game.

Sorry, correction – it makes no difference what colour or length someones socks are (provided that they are wearing socks).

Not talking down anything mate. The facts are if you want to wear cargo shorts, jeans an any other non-golfing attire your best choice here in Australia is a Muny…..a public course.

I don’t have issue with that. My point is that whatever course you play at, be it a basic Muny or RM there are dress rules. And for the most part these rules are universal…..I.e) The same.

So wherever I play I dress appropriately and I don’t understand why people get annoyed when they are reprimanded for not conforming. As I said in my first post on this topic, there is more to golf then just the act of trying to get the ball into the hole in the least number of shots.

i think some clubs are just up themselves and full of snobs and because they are members of private clubs some of them feel the need to look down on people for wotever reason they can find .. in my club you can wear cargo shorts so long as they are neat and tidy and dont look like you have just come from work ..you can wear socks as low as your shoes .. you can wear jeans in the clubhouse if you wish so long as they are also neat and tidy .. cant see what the bloody problem is .. obviously my club is run by reasonable people .. go figure !!!

My gripe relates to dress standards on the practice range. I just can’t understand why many suburban clubs insist that the dress standards on the course are replicated on the practice range. It’s only practice FFS. I can’t see any valid reason why clubs insist on a golf outfit on the practice range. When I go to my local tennis courts to practice, I don’t have to dress like Roger Federer. The same should apply to the practice range at the local golf course. Another example of rules without thinking.

TTR I think welly has hit it, golf used to be run and played by a certain class of ppl, plebs could not afford and were not Wecome.

Some attitudes have not changed, some will never understand that fashions change. As long as the attire is neat and clean there are many forms of dress that would be more suitable for golf than Bermuda shorts and long socks.

I will break 90 this year.

It is NOT my age.

It is NOT for 9 holes.

am with you here True
i never practice at home course for the very reason

any one else heading home to get married??

The dress code should begin at your club because if you go to say private club or club in a city dressed in relaxed way that you are used to you will find out very quickly that you may not get on if you are not properly attired. It is not hard to have a collared shirt tailored shorts & to have the shirt tucked in! My course has taken down its dress code as it was totally ignored. I know of a course in the UK that you have to wear a RED shirt when playing, silly i know but they are the rules that have been around a long time.

tailored shorts

wtf are these????

any one else heading home to get married??

I’m a member of a private club with strict dress code, no problems. I played a wonderful public course last week that didn’t have strict dress regulations….....great. Just do as you are asked and if the majority of members want the dress code changed it will be. The reason it isn’t changed at private clubs is that the majority like it that way and they’re from all walks of life btw.

Yep, Kiwi. And to be a bit clearer, I’m not talking about wearing a wife beater & a pair of thongs.

I actually do find it hard to keep my shirt tucked in while playing. The course in the UK you are talking about (Wimbledon Common) only has that rule to distinguish golfers from non-golfers as the course is on parkland with lots of dog walkers etc – it is a safety measure and not some stupid dreamed up irrelevant rule like sock length.

What is reasonably dressed?

The New York Post as an obviously respected news medium also published this Golf story; “LI golfers hired strippers and hookers to entertain them at posh club: complaint” http://www.nypost.com/p/new...

Strippers at Golf Course

It is a downright disgrace the dress code standards slipping at golf clubs! Some clubs are even having women play in mixed competition days. Now is the dress code gender based or not as I am wondering if it is okay to wear a skirt as long as it covers my knees?
