Ladies NSW Open- poor form Fairfax

Is this the best photo you clowns could come up with.

Quality field and quality players but this is poor form.

If you build it, they will come.

They are bloody pathetic.
That’s the kind of photo that gives golf in general a bad rap!
How hard is it wait till laura is smiling and then snap away…... nice swing extension on the bird in the foreground though:-)

Be waiting a long time for Laura Davies to smile on the golf course. Try hole number 72 after she’s tapped in to win.

The photo they’ve put in is to accompany the yarn about this big-hitting Kiwi kid playing with Laura Davies. Which is what they did. What do you want from them? Herds of wildebeast frolicing about in the background? The Pyramids of Giza? Tiger Woods??

Photos of golf are routinely pretty ordinary. What are you going to put in? Headshots of grimace? Fist-pumps? In Round 2? Don’t happen.

Women’s golf – and the NSW Open in particular – is lucky they get anything at all. It’s well down the list of public interest. Fairfax’s coverage is the most women’s golf has had since Natalie Gulbis’s legs were strutting around Royal Sydney.

And in comparison to the Sunday Tele’s picture, and overall golf coverage, the Sun-Herald has gone gangbusters: a double-page spread, and half a dozen other yarns about golf, compared with half a page and a dud pic.

No?

Matt, unless I’m reading them wrong, I think army is not worried about the level of coverage, but the fact that the poor girls guts are hanging out from under her top. Surely they could have taken a photo that is a little more ‘flattering’.

Agree with the photo – pretty poor. Article was actually quite good.

Jeez I dunno… Seems like a double-standard. Women’s golf – women’s sport – has long been screaming that it shouldn’t be objectified by what the players look like, that their performances should be what we focus on rather than their looks.

So the chick’s got a belly. Kevin Stadler has a belly. His father The Walrus has a belly. Do you care how unflattering pictures of those blokes are?

Matt, The coverage of golf in the SUn Herald of late has been excellent, nearly every week a 2 page spread.

I liked the story and the coverage, but my point was that of all 18 holes the kiwi and Laura played and no doubt the photographer took shots of, the (editor or sub editor?) picks one where the girls guts is out.

Too me its almost a piss take and no doubt he/she editor was giggling as he went to print last night.

Now…the fat blokes cover their bellies and tuck their shirts in, so you dont get rolls of fat coming out from under neath. Maybe the ladies can cover up a bit more so as it doesnt happen again.

If you build it, they will come.

Mate, they may have been asking for it, but golf in particular, has a much higher proportion of men following, and harsh as it may be, we will always gravitate to the attractive ones. If I was at a womens golf tournament and the pairings were Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis, then Laura Davies and Ji Yi Shin, I know where I and most of the gallery would be, regardless of their position in the tournament.

Men will be a lot more less judgemental with mens golf, they don’t care what they look like, as long as they are at the pointy end of the tournament.

I’m not saying its fair, but its just reality…

Perhaps she shouldn’t be wearing a shirt like that!!!! Just a thought!!

No doubt you’re right and this photo will probably convince her to either lose weight or get a longer shirt.
However, it’s still a pretty weak act to pick this one out if they had a stack of better ones.

That is pretty funny.

Having said that though I expect Caroline Wilson will resign on Monday though.

Al/Shark/Curly/Herman/Pieman/Eagleton played rep footy with Greg ’Diesel’ Williams.

I’d say that the NSW Open was lucky to get any coverage..

As the saying goes…”no photo….no story”

Chick golf has it’s ups and downs, but lately I’ve enjoyed any coverage that’s done.

So many of them are looking and playing the part and many of their short games are to die for!

Agreed, overall I’d rather see a tight tummy drift that one could rub one’s nose on!

Woof!

It’s a bit of flab. It’s a bit of the human body. Are we that much of a body-conscious society? Is this Woman’s Day? Golfers are all shapes, like people are all shapes. People with a bit of flab aren’t “worse”. A photo of her without the belly – but not showing her excellent and extended follow-through, y’know – her golf swing – wouldn’t be “better”. Better for who? Is flab that offensive? If Warney took a bag-full with a pot-belly and a double-chin he’s not lesser. John Daly won two majors carrying extra kegs. Champion bloke. And if this chick goes on to be something and is out and proud of her very human belly, fantastic, strike one against a society in which the Biggest Loser is actually a television show consumed by the masses and toothy-smiling Seppos are on telly with the latest six-easy-payment Ab-dominator.

There was a photo of Sarah Oh from the Ladies Open in one of the papers ….she too was showing a bit of midriff.

I had the same reaction for both…”a bit too much information”.

I guess thats the way they make girls shirts

women’s fashion has long been a source of disinterest. who knows what they’re thinking.

too much information? sounds a conservative outlook.

I’d hit it…

with my 4 iron.

too much information? sounds a conservative outlook.

Lets just say if it was Miranda Kerr on the course i would have a different view

so you only appreciate women’s golf if you want to root the golfers?

I’m not having a crack, alleging you’re mysoginist. I have the same feeling for netball, cricket and a few other sport women play – tennis I don’t really give a fuck about unless i’ve got money on them or Maria Sharapova is sweating up a storm.

Anna K, no more to say.

But golf … dinkum you watch pro women swing a golf club and it’s highly instructive for the mid-handicap amateur punter. Women’s golf is really good.

but obviously it’s more attractive if Natalie Gulbis and her sensational norks are playing. And her legs. And rock-solid buttocks you could not hesitate to eat a three-course meal off, I would suggest.

But let’s be dinkum.

Who are you more likely to wake up next to after a night at the local discotecque?.

Natalie Gulbis? Or the chubby Kiwi babe?

hm?

be honest …

look….. if I’m getting my nose wet….it will only be an a tight mid-drift or a set of cans that are out there!

as they say…... if you have it flaunt it….otherwise put it away

I certainly find it a turn off see undesirable fresh on public display like in this shot….

like a granny bending down and showing a full view of her thong…fails to get a reaction (in all places)..so did this pick of some chubby Kiwi babe with that spare around her belly…

BTW, Gulbis has a set that I would get my nose wet on, that is for sure

I’d be following Ji Yi Shin. As far as I’m concerned Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer are the two most over-rated looking golfer around. Give me Sophie Sandolo or Anna Rawson, at least they are genuinely good to look at, PC and NG are average at best.

Lefties do it better.

Have you ever seen Natalie Gulbis live …?

I did happen to go out to Outlands late in the day to see the girls in action. I’m a mid handicapper and I quite like to see the ladies hitting it with effortless swings…especially those who are around my height and weight. If they are good looking that’s a bonus.

Golf first, looks second otherwise i’d be at the beach

I was a spectator at Oatlands over the weekend, and that photo does Phillis Meti no justice whatsoever. She looks very fit and athletic, even if she doesnt have a rippling six pack, and no doubt she hits the ball further than most of the guys who post on these forums, myself included.

Good call Vinny
I think we are getting away from the point of the original post, but I was there all weekend and I thought the coverage could have been better also. We did lose a few of the European stars from the field due to the change of dates so that would not have helped. but still some extremely good golf and golfers in what at times were torrential conditions. One of the things that is so good about this tournament is the fact that there are no ropes so the fans can get real close at times and. These girls can really play and Phillis hits it long.. real long. and yes that photo did not help her she is a very fit and extremely personable lady. – just needs to find a few more fairways.

"the woods are full of long drivers"

I guess the photographer finally got the shot with Meti in the foreground and Davies in the background and both in focus: but didn’t notice the pot belly peeking out under the shirt, or the guy checking his package in the background.
