An Australian Major......

In raising this new topic I’m basing it on many ‘if’s’ and assumptions but hear me out. With Tiger playing in the Oz Masters on a superb course and with this hopefully raising the profile of the quality of golf in our country is there any slim chance that our major event-The Australian Open could ever get close to becoming the unofficial ‘fifth’ major again and even one day getting the nod? If not even making it a WGC event? As we all know most if not all of the true greats of the game have won it. I obviously know that TW isn’t playing in it (this year), but if Golf Australia and the respective State Govts got their acts in gear in future years and splashed some cash and got our past and present great players to lobby for it is there any chance the status could be lifted? Now all I pray for is that there are no issues with greens burning in the heat this year like at Victoria GC a few years back! Interested to hear peoples comments and views. Thanks

put a heap of money in the prize pot and people will come down to play. would be great to see it as a WGC event though.

Worst thing about this country is the lack of local support financially. Apparently this country is flying yet the Masters is sponsored by Goldman sachs, Our national football Grand final by a Japanese Car company. The Tennis open IBM???

Sorry mate, but this years major event is the Masters, despite Sydney having John Daly as their headliner. (I’m LOLing so hard right now)

Yeh, kinda funny. Tiger versus Big John doesn’t really seem fair. As mentioned above, even our domestic events need foreign sponsorship even though our players get paid bugger all compared to what overseas sportsman get paid. We just don’t have the population to support the kind of income our own sports stars command. We definitely can’t afford a whole bunch of American/European/Asian etc stars and our events have fallen away as a result. An Australian golf major doesn’t seem likely without lots of the worlds best taking a large paycut.

The Aust Open lost it’s chance to become a ‘top world class’ event when the AGU starting switching the venues away from, primarily, Melbourne and to a lesser extent Sydney some years ago. As stated above the sponsorship $$ is basically stuffed on the back of this move. IMO the Masters is the event to go forward. Melbourne people pack out any major sporting event and $$’s through the gate attract sponsors, and in doing so attract world class fields. This event could be linked to both Europe and Asia and away we go !!!

Ok I will go back to what i said 2 weeks ago I think the US PGA which has so many international players playing on it should be played oustide the US every 3rd year.. as in the PGA major…. I mean look at how amny south africans, australians, asian players on the US tour…even woods himself has a thai mum….... I firmly believe 3 majors in the US is too heavily weighted in favor of that country…and that it would actually be great for the US PGA tour to play that major oustide the US say every third year

FFS How many times do people have to say it….? Didn’t you read the replies to your post? The PGA Tour want THEIR ONLY big Tournament, the Players, to be seen as the “5th Major. Unfortunately for them, there are 4 majors. And unfortunately for those who want to see a major somewhere else, none of the majors are controlled or organised by the PGA Tour. And – as has been said numerous times. why would the USPGA (US club pros) want their event held somewhere else?

i think that pretty much sums it up for you, nikey ho.

settle pettle its just my opinion…..... even stupidly the players championship is played in the US also…..Im not anti american but golf is a truely global game and it should be recognised dont worry it wont ever happen it just a fantasy really and i think its a good idea…... you say its not run by the tour ….well the co sanction it and Im sure PGA officials run the tournament…how else would it run…...

Hey Dave, One thing to remember Golf is much bigger in Other countries based on poulation which equates to dollars. The USA host about 50% of the worlds courses and players. That leaves the rest of the world with the other 50%. Golf is so much bigger in the USA based on about 280 Million population plus Mexicans. This euqates to more sponsors available and a bigger market overall. The other factor Golf is promoted better in the USA and other parts of the world. Media has alot to do with this. You can see the difference and interest in Golf with the Masters now that Tiger is here. Imagine have Phil, Vijay, Anthony, Bubba, Ernie and a few others here, I am sure it would be a sell out every time and there would be alot more sponsors willing to participate which would also increase the prize money. I am hoping like all of us that Australia gets back on the golfing map for the worlds best. Hope next year we get Tiger and Phil. Even if they payed both of them $3M each I am sure they could pump up ticket prices to cover some of the cost. Who would you like to see play here next year?

I think you’ll have to let this one go lefty. Most everyone else understands it.

yeah I agree…. 10 years ago…. no one would have imagine an NBA game played oustide the USA Yes the USA is a massive place in terms of promotion/marketing in relation to golf and sports in general….. well know that but the world is a far bigger place than the US… it may never happen but they would be silly not to consider it…and it certainly wouldnt detract from the event… also if you read this article the tour wants to run events oustide the USA http://www.guardian.co.uk/s...

Gawd…. Give me strength. The U.S. Open is run by the USGA. The PGA Tour is a separate entity. My last comment. Except….. I think Mercedes should start calling Toyotas Mercedes cars because lots of people like Toyotas but can’t afford a Mercedes. It’s logical.

I’ll stay out of the PGA discussion… but I do think our officials should seriously look at scheduling an event in 2011 around the president’s cup. The major pain for the US guys is flying over here, but since they’re here already, surely we could entice some of them to stay (or come early) to play an open or a masters? Surely couples (is he going to be captain next time?) would encourage the boys to play an open on the sandbelt the week before the presidents cup, best preparation they could have… Els and the internationals love playing here… could be the best chance we have to showcase our courses over a couple of weeks Please don’t make them play at Moonah Links…
|
|
Good idea. The presidents cup is about mid november next year, so surely it would not be a stretch to follow up the the 3 aussie majors. Can only hope those making the schedules seize the opportunity.

Isn’t the Masters run by the Augusta National Golf Club? That’s what it says on the tickets and how they announce it at the commencement of play on the first day. I never saw “The Masters” saying they ran the Masters when I was there. Not that I want to be picky about someone being picky, of course.

Why does tennis draw some many dollars?

<isn> Fair enough – The Augusta National Golf Club Tournament Committee – but I hardly think it’s being picky pointing out that The PGA Tour doesn’t have the authority to move a tournament that isn’t run by them.

If your talking Australian tennis, lots of aussies (kids) playing tennis = shit tins of rackets, socks, skirts, shorts, socks, balls …..... the list goes on. Good return for the sponsors dollar. I just had a look at Tennis Australia’s website, awesome.
