Golf in the olympics - why not?

Why the heck isn’t golf in the Olympics? Think about it, there is everything in there, even “sports” where you needed to be judged as to who wins (really, it is not a sport if you need to judge it). If they had golf, I’d have watched an Olympic event this time around.

agree. if ping pong, synchronised swimming, any of that horse related nonsense is in there why not golf?

I don’t see it much different then running or skiing. Train for years, get the best equipment you can get for yourself, and the play to compete at always varies.

and air rifle and pistol. But didn’t we just do all this in another thread?

Personally I don’t favour Golf for the Olympics. I also disagree with many sports that are currently included in the Games. If Golf was ever included they could perhaps adapt the current World Cup and play it over two rounds. Four rounds would just be too long for a Games event. Maybe an amateur event could be considered. As stated, I am against the inclusion but maybe in time it could happen.

I don’t read every thread here, nor am I here ever day.

I’d like to see mixed pairs in a Ryder Cup type format.

most golfers are too arrogant, precious and overpaid for it to ever be considered. could you imagine Robert Allenby slumming it with the Australian team in the Olympic Village?..no.
..i'll come up with one soon.. |

yep and kobe, lebron, wade, ronaldinho, bolt, powell all so humble
|
|
which is why the dreamteam look like they don’t belong there.. you’re abit harsh on Bolt.. he has carried himself really well in the interviews I’ve seen.

yeah i agree. but he showboats a lot it is entertaining. im not saying it is wrong just that i dont know any golfers that showboat like that

If golf was ever to be in the Olympics, I believe that it should be the best amateur players from each participating country and not the best golf pro’s from each country around the world. That would throw a spanner in the works with who might win the Gold/Silver/Bronze? If I ever had the talent to play off a scratch handicap and I never will attain this by the way but dream of it, it would be awesome to know that you could play in events in your home country to try and qualify for the Olympics. There is so much money in this world on offer to the best of whatever sport a participant is in and I reckon that if the top pro’s won Gold/Silver/Bronze, would they really care for winning it?

Becau$e there are four events every year that would be much more important to a golfer than an Olympic medal. Nothing tops an Olympic medal in skiing or athletics or swimming. Every year, 4 events in Tennis top an Olympic tennis medal.

but since tennis is in already
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |
|
but the olympics is every 4 years, so much rarer. every tom dick and harry has won a grand slam

Yeah like Adam Scott eh soulman… 8-)

I’m not such a big fan on the idea of it being in the Olympics. Unless it was an amateur event like the boxing is. Otherwise the bigger countries like the U.S. would probably clean up all the gold medals! If you ask any tennis player what their dream tournament win would be, they would probably say Wimbledon, not the Olympics. As much as it would be great for the game to have it shown to the world in the Olympics, I don’t know how they would go about it.

I don’t think any professional sport should be in the Olympics. In my humble opinion the Olympics should be reserved for amateur sports. But if golf was included….....i’d certainly be up all night watching it :-)

I heard Trevor Immelman commenting on this. He stated that he thinks golf should not be included, as it is a professional sport already. Sports like running etc only have major events every few years (world champs, olympics etc) and these competitors rely on these events for exposure and earnings. Golf on the other hand has events on a weekly basis. Yeh golf is a sport that could be included in the olympics, but some other sports need that exposure to survive also.

should only include female amateurs who wear the same uniform as racinfarmer’s avatar :)

Now there is a great idea…....... bring it on !!!!

you would eliminate a lot of sports from the Olympics that way,

Even more reason why tennis should be out…..they both dont have a place at the Olympics. Winning a Major v winning an Olympic gold in either sport – geez I know which one I’d rather have
|
|
Wouldn’t it just be easier to put every sport into the Olympics and make it a 4 year long extravaganza?

tennis should be in but there should be an age limit no-one under 40
