Like most of us, I guess, finding it hard to move my handicap too much and seem stuck on the same mark.

If everyone puts their tip down, it may build into a library, that can help us all win that major, we all believe we’ve got in us (haha)

Here’s my tip for starters

Lag putting….. Be happy with two putts. If i put it within the “dustbin lid” all the time I’m not going to leave myself 12 feet past

Hit fewer shots… works for me

Go see the Dart, Guru or Bio depending on which state you are in. They will work wonders.

Get lessons on the proper technique for around greens. Then practice as much as you can.
Golf is no different from any other sport. If you don’t work at it, it simply won’t happen. Can you imagine Tiger Woods not practicing? If he has to then how can anyone else play well without practice? They can’t.

There are no quick fixes.

Get a reputable teacher to instruct you, then practice.

If you build it, it will come.

Have a couple of cans on the back nine…

seriously though if you concentrate on focusing your course management at trying to lessen the bad holes rather than getting upset about not having pars or birdies It might help.

If say your hcp is 9-22 try and eliminate the double bogeys from your game. The pars will come of their own accord. When you hit a bad shot though, don’t try for the miracle out. Take your medicine, get it back into play and try and make Bogey.

Similarly if your a longer marker try and eliminate the triple bogeys.

I play off 10 and wouldn’t be upset if i had a round of 18 bogeys. Might not be thrilled but I am happy to not have anything worse than a bogey. I reckon i manage it about 3 times a year ( and i play about 80+ games a year)

have a go to shot – chip or pitch from just in front of the green, then lay up on the tough holes. There’s always somewhere “safe” near the front, going for the pin leads to bogeys.

I could lower my handicap by improved putting.

39 points, seven 3 putts. Ouch.

I had two 1 putts, and of the nine 2 putts, most of them should have been 1.

I’ve never been so pissed off in all my life.

If you are really serious about lowering your handicap then my suggestion would be that you grab your self a couple of lessons concentrating on shots within 30 metres of the green.

When I was younger and had time and enthusiam for practise, this is the area I worked on. I managed to get my hcp down to 4 and I believe that achievement was aided by a drill I worked on dilligently.

I would take 6 balls, stand at a hole and throw them off in different directions and different distances. I would not leave until I had pitched/chipped and putted the six balls.

The only thing that would stop me from achieving this was darkness or Melbourne’s freezing winters making it so cold that I couldn’t feel the club in my hands. (Consequently I moved to QLD)

As a consequence my ratio of up and downs during a game were very high. Knowing that I had a better than good chance of making the up and down meant that i had little pressure on my irons to the greens. This in effect relaxed my thoughts and my swing and the result was that I made more greens.

So many people stand belting drivers on a range. Now I’m not saying that driving is not important, but it is not where the majority of your shot are saved. The old saying of “drive for show and putt for $” is an oldie but stands so true in lowering any score.

play smart

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?

Play better!!

Have clubs, As a middle of the road handicapper if I play a round without a double or worse I will have a good score with a chance of winning the daily comp. My problem seems to be that if I get 1 double I tend to follow it with a couple more.

A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all. :(

No one who ever had a lesson would have a swing like mine

  • Get lessons, including short game lessons.
  • Work with a coach.
  • Build a consistent, repeatable swing.
  • Develop a sound pre-shot routine
  • Practice intelligently all aspects of your game at least three times a week.
  • Focus solely on the shot you are playing and don’t lose concentration.

This works for me
(1) Lessons
(2) Practise (make time)
(3) No more 3 putts
(4) Take stats of say 5 rounds and work on the weak area’s.
Fairways hit. Greens in reg. Putts.
They will turn into strengths.

Your life style will be the influencing factor on how much of the above you can do. If I didn’t have a family my golf would be better.
It’s a life I choose.

Beers before, during and after the round – especially if you are playing with a good mate who enjoys the amber as much as you do.

I twice had 43 points last summer – both involved 3 schooners before the round and about half a dozen cans during the round. I was relaxed, didn’t try to hit it too hard, and just enjoyed the day out. The score came after that…

If you’re a teenager…..get lessons. Young minds and bodies are more easily moulded and you have good hope!
If you fit into the young adult to middle-aged category, lessons might not be high on your priority list. O.K so do it your way but remember once your game plateaus you might be playing off that handicap or thereabouts for the rest of your golfing life! I suppose you’ve got to ask yourself…are you going to be happy with that? If you want to go forward from this point have quarterly lessons. You might just surprise yourself.
If you’re retired play as many courses as you can and enjoy the beautiful game!

in your putting practise right before you play (assuming you do) practise putting at a tee stuck in the ground rather than the holes themselves. Hone in on that small area and when it a 4.5” hole to aim at be just as focussed and you’ll have room to spare if you need it. May only save you once or twicw a round but that will do the trick!

drive for show - putt for D'OH!!!
Do i dare?, Yes I'm going square!!

I think staying relaxed and not getting ahead of yourself is a big thing (i should take this advice on board) . Being accurate inside 100m is a big thing.

don’t have 12 beers the night before…

My best round came after a massive night on the juice!!!!

As for the question, 2 words: Short Game

Paul lives at the Vines (suburb) and teaches from his studio at his house. The Golf club that he also teaches for range and course is Chequers (Bullsbrook). It is about 15 minutes away from his place.
