Hi Guys! I have just put my name down to be a Board Carrier for the Australian Masters later in the year. Has anyone here ever done this or any other volunteering for the major tournaments before? Interested to hear stories

Well, I walked onto the 18th with my camera at the Qld PGA last year and stood and yacked to the spotter. He was a nice guy who appreciated the company and I liked the fact he could tell me what was going on. We had a ball, he scammed me a nice meat salad roll for lunch and generally a great day was had by all, and not only that I got some awesome photos… he thought it funny that I had walked through the gate and no one had questioned the fact I was taking photos when cameras were generally not allowed.

3 bad shots and 1 good shot is still a 4....

I do the masters every year. My understanding is this will be the last year at huntingdale so I guess the tradition will continue somewhere else.

Cliff,
what day was this? One of the pre tourney practice days or one of Thursday through Sunday?
Camera’s are allowed at US Tour events on practice days, but not on game days.
I’m keen on getting some shots at the Aus open on the practice days.
cheers

It was Saturday, the third round… beautiful day and one of the nicest I have ever spent on the golf course and not played golf….

I caddied at the NSW Womens open and had a great time in side the ropes. met some really great people. and will do it again this year. Ive taken a lot of photos at pro events in Aus, and as long as you keep your head down and dont shoot at inapropriate times you are usually OK.

Take a reasonably long lens so you get back a bit, choose a nice quiet fairway and chat up the pros while you are doing it and it’s great… they really loved the attention and I love the photos…
here’s one I took that day…

I carried the leaderboard at the Australian open when it was played at Royal Sydney 2 years ago. It was a great experience to be able to walk the fairways with top pros, i was lucky enough to get Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby, Stephen Leaney, Matt Goggin, Peter O’malley and Craig stadler over the two days i volunteered. Just make sure you dont stand directly behind them or they crack it like Appleby did to me. It’s a great experience and a good way to get free tickets to tournaments!

How do you do this? I would love the opportunity to caddy for someone!

Yeah I know! Free entry for me and a friend, free clothes, a free round at Huntingdale after the event! Plus great experience inside the ropes! I can’t wait! : )

I have some really nice HQ pics from The Australian PGA at Hyatt Regency Coolum last December. Hiding under an umbrella made me feel really sneaky and covert. Unfortunately, not all of them have been transferred onto this PC yet, but here are a few:

Just get in touch with the volunteer organiser at the host club. Smaller tourneys are a great place to start as the players dont always have their loops with them, The NSW open was a week before the Aus open, and plenty of top flight players didnt have their caddies with them that week. You can always get a start at a pro am, get to see whats going on and meet planty of good folks in the process. Not sure where your at but the NSW ladies will need help again this year.
