Ryder Cup players are like slaves

at least according to Hunter Mahan a US Ryder Cup potential (although probably not o much now). According to an interview with Golf magazine he states that he has heard from other players that there is no fun to be had during the week. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport... Maybe the US should try winning for a change. ;) Although to be honest I’m sure every European golfer and supporter thoroughly enjoys the biennial US slaughter. ;) Here’s hoping for another one.

good for you. ;) |

What a knob he is. How awful to have to go to a dinner! Guaranteed this is the same guy who as a kid watched the matches and said over a 3 footer “This for the Ryder Cup”. Guys like him opening his flapper are more likely to kill the ryder cup than anything else.

I thought he was saying he wanted to focus on the golf more than the felafel. Seemed fair enough to me, but maybe a bit poorly expressed. Slaves? Pffft.

Yeah, but it’s not just a dinner – it’s a really big dinner! and every night!

a dinner wow man who cares? poor money bags…..

(Sigh.) He doesn’t want to be up all night wining and dining with rich wankers. He probably wants to be able to practice and get some rest before the next day’s play. Yeah, let’s stick the knife into the spoilt bastard.

Its not like he actually knows though is it? Instead of having an attitude where he gets in the team (which he isn’t currently in) and does the ‘ryder cup thang’, he is saying before he even goes how much he is dreading it. It is often said that one of the reasons that Europe has been doing much better recently is because they look at the dinners and things as an opportunity for team bonding and socialising. The US team don’t really want to go practice (they barely even bothered at the K Club!), they want to sit in their hotel rooms and order room service which is exactly what most of them do for the twenty odd weeks they play on tour. Perhaps he should also realise that the ‘rich wankers’ have paid a lot of their money to attend the dinner. Their company has paid a hell of a lot of money towards the staging of that event and others that he plays in and that without the ‘rich wankers’ and their corporate sponsorship he would not have the lifestyle that he clearly doesn’t deserve!

In addition, you are suggesting that these dinners are held every night of the competition. There are dinners during the early part of the week – these are the ones the septic tanks object to. On the Thursday night there is an official opening ceremony and dinner but it is not something they are expected to attend into the wee hours! There are no more dinners then until the closing ceremony. The next thing will be they’ll be looking for sick notes to excuse them from the opening ceremony!!!!

My guess is that you Styles are going for the European team?

Hunter Mahan is exactly right. The Ryder Cup has turned into a complete joke, where the players donate their time so that the organising body can make a profit. They should either be paid, or the profits should go to charity like the Presidents Cup. “Perhaps he should also realise that the ‘rich wankers’ have paid a lot of their money to attend the dinner. Isn’t everyone…?

James …just a small point…If it wasn’t for organisations like the PGA do you thing there would be a Pro Tour?

Yes there would be. The PGA Tour and PGA of America are entirely separate organisations. Few if any of the American Ryder Cup players would be members of the PGA of America, yet they’re expected to provide their services for free. This could be justified if the profits went to charity, but instead the organisers prostitute the event to make as much money as possible for themselves. The way the Ryder Cup is structured is an absolute scandal, but unfortunately any player who questions it gets taken to task. All those dinners they have to attend achieve little purpose but to line the pockets of the organising association.

what a load of bollocks. There’s nothing new in this argument, look at this exert from 1999: David Duval needs more cash and less dinners More fall out from Mahan who now appears quite contrite! What a strange world we live in where Hunter has gone from being a poster boy to the likes of James above, to now seeking out Azinger and apologising for his words.

How tragic to see Hunter struggling at the USPGA. Still at least it will mean he won’t have to worry about attending dinners the third weekend in September
