What do you avoid?

I’m starting this thread after hearing that Anthony Kim injured himself by playing baseball earlier this week. With Els having injured himself on a jetski (allegedly) and Tiger having initially done his stress fractures by running, I wondered what sports or activities my fellow ISGers avoid in case they injured themselves and were forced to miss golf? Personally, I won’t play contact sports like football after seeing someone wreck their leg and miss a season. I don’t like to play racket sports as they can encourage bad movements with the forearms and can also give you pain the following day. Mrs Styles has forbidden me to do any wardrobe diving (although I don’t blame her, I’m still a fair bit from my fighting weight!). If there is a big competition I will avoid any heavy drinking sessions. What things will you not do?

mouth and remove all doubt |

Harden the F* up is what I would saysoory to be so frank but I have never heard such dribble

I avoid a good night sleep the night before a round styles- Its weird but I find if i have a solid 8 hour sleep i play terrible, usually between 4 and 6 and i’m good :)

Dr_Gribbles_Esquire: everytime I look back in here your name has gotten even longer! When did you get your doctorate & your heritage, did I miss something??!! 8) I have found over the years that avoiding work has worked wonders with my game. When working, I don’t seem to be able to get below the 6/7 mark. When not working, 4 is normal and if I bother to practice, 3 is not far away. But then I usually stuff that up by getting involved in someones project of some kind, which my wife then refers to as “work”, and my game detoriates accordingly!! 8( Brett

Lol avoiding work. So true! I dunno if a harden the fk up is necessary. I believe if you want to play at your peak, then avoiding potential dangers is a good bit of pre-course management. I don’t go out on fridays, or at least be home and in bed by 12 during cricket season as I feel that I play rubbish when I haven’t had a good nights sleep. The sport I play with the most contact in it would be Soccer (ok stop shouting at me… football), not so bad but I saw a guy tear his ACL the other week and by the way he was howling I was guessing he wouldn’t be fit for golfing any time soon. I also avoid drinking till I throw up because quite frankly I hate the morning after, but that is somewhat unrelated.

I dont think we should stop doing the things we love, just for the sake of Amateur Golf! I just broke my collarbone in a game of rugby, out of sport for 6 weeks!

I think the important thing here is the relative level you are competing at as junior pro said. Do you really need to avoid activities if you are just competing week to week in a local Saturday comp? I think it is a different story when it is your livelihood and you are playing for a million dollars every week. How many people have the opportunity to do that? It also comes down to priorities, how important is staying fit and healthy for golf competition? I think harden the f*ck up is a harsh call to someone who is as passionate about their golf as Styles is, but I can certainly understand where it is coming from. You can wrap yourself in cotton wool as much as you like but at the end of the day life happens! You could just as easily injure yourself in practice sessions or on the course playing. Can you not injure yourself in the gym doing strength and conditioning for golf? Does this mean you don’t practice or do gym work just in case? Most of us have to work for a living (unfortunately! lol), does this too not carry injury risks? I know my job does, but hey that’s life and at the end of the day golf is not putting food on my table! This discussion can get a bit crazy I think if you take it to the ultimate in self protection… Do you not drive a car for fear of having an accident? Do you no longer walk down the street for fear of being hit by a bus? I personally don’t avoid anything – except maybe too big a night out before a competition. But in Styles defence do you put yourself in risky activities prior to major competition if golf is a priority? Probably not.
Feel it, execute it, live with it. |

Seeing as I locked up my reconstructed knee (same injury as Tiger but the other leg) on the 2nd tee yesterday I see golf as the most hazardous thing I do….Having said that, the pain goes away after a minute & if you keep walking on it it’s fine. Still shot 6 over.

The only thing I avoid are cars on the way to the course!

Firstly Racinfarmer i disagree. I like his better but wish we had a closer view. secondly the things i try to avoid are double bogeys, snakes, lightning storms, slowe golfers and getting stressed.

Racinfarmer, your title has been challenged, I suggest you match or better him with your next pic :-)

Have_clubs it truly is a very nice young lady in Harlots avatar as it belongs to an email which is “why you should play golf” and that pic is the last one in the series. The bloke on the cart is just sitting there looking straight ahead nicely relaxed with his arms behind his head and really cant blame him at all.

probably a computer trick !
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |

I’m alot more carefull of how I work now as somedays alot can be heavy lifting. Last week i was trying to dig a stump out of the yard and smashed my finger after the jumping around and swearing the first thing I did was grip a club and take a few swing’s to make sure there was no real damage. Now we have water again i’ll get back into water skiing in summer, though when I come of the wakeboard onto hard as @#$% water i’ll try do hit it a bit softer :)

I just remembered one of my biggest golfing problems. I’m a terrible nail biter and sometimes ( particularly when watching football) I’ll bite them down to the corner and get one infected. Been doing it all my life. actually when i was a little tacker i used to bite my toe nails too, been a long time since i could reach them though. And on the avatar thing – who cares if its a computer thing!! I don’t think Racinfarmer can beat that one with another photo of his granddaughter.

I can see where your coming from Styles, you play off about 3, right? I got down to 4 and was probably in a similar mindset – took golf seriously and would try to avoid injury if i had a big event coming up. But really, as AB mentioned, you can hurt yourself any number of ways. A few years back, a pro, cant remember who, (maybe David Toms??) missed a major by cutting his finger instead of his sandwich. Earlier this year, Ewan Porter was leading the Moonah Classic and hurt his neck warming up in the gym. I just read an interview where he said he called his mum crying saying he had to pull out. (ended up playing & won).

First of all, welcome Harlot. ;) After having surgery on my right knee due to a torn cruciate and after doing the same damage to my left knee I tend to watch what I’m doing. !st injury came from playing football (soccer to you Aussie’s) and then badminton for the left knee. Other than that I’m fine. In order to play well I live by the Greg Norman way of thinking a la my sig. ;)
Greg Norman, proof that lots of sex before a major competiton is
good for you. ;) |

I like your way of thinking also 12shoc though now I have a 6 mth old baby and that is affecting my golf (at least this weekend) as I had to baby sit and missed saturday and sunday! So be wary as there are consequences to every action!!

I reckon stress is the thing that wrecks my golf the most – oh and barneys with the missus about golf! Staying calm & having a balanced life helps your golf
