Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can - What spins more?

I finally tried out a Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can 60deg the other day and it was incredible.
All the milled face wedges spin.
Has anyone ever tried a Solus wedge? They look great! but havent seen any down here before.
My trusty Vokey BV 256 from the “stoneage” still spins as much as any current wedge out there that I have tried. Technique plays a major part as we all know.
Bad luck that |
Sure technique plays a part but a milled wedge face spins more than a non milled , fact.
havn’t tried the XM….but have tried the Y Cutter and Mack Daddy grooves. MD’s spin a bunch. and are my choice of wedge at the moment. i prefer the way they sit

MD’s spin more than Vokey SM.
i thought loft had a lot more to do with spin than the grooves, thats why buffers wedge spins as much as the current. All the research done recently in the grooves debate proves the difference is minimal.

How the flying f—k can you get spin from the rough or a really bad lie from the rough? It does not matter if you have a wedge with grooves on it desinged by NASA? If any person on this site can spin a wedge from long rough, say a 60 deg, let me know. From the rough, the ball and clubface has grass between it? Yes, one can hit a cut up and hit the ball high to land it soft but no spin?
Bad luck that |
Just watch some of the pros on tele!

Is there any way you can legally work on your wedges to increase spin from a well hit pitch? (Hopefully without chewing through your balls too quickly.)

USGA Study shows that certain groove patterns, such as those used on the new style wedges, X-Tour, Spin Milled, CG12 Zip Grooves and such, that feature U-Grooves compared to V-Grooves produce more spin and higher landing angles, FROM ANY LIE. your current SM grooves, will spin more from any lie, be it rough, fairway or deep deep rough that is twice the height of your ball, than an older style V grooved wedge.

Sorry, not so technically minded when it comes to clubs so excuse the question, but how do you tell the difference between milled and non milled club faces?

Have a look at mickyboys 1st post. That is a milled face.

Loft/grove/ball design is important to get the ball to spin. The one big reason tour players can spin the ball so much is talent. Wrist speed and how they hit the ball.

Testing times!!! Years ago in the USA I was involved with testing some wedges. They all varied greatly but two of them really stick firm and fast in my mind. The first one had no grooves what so ever but had a very heavy sand blasting on the face. This baby could spin the ball very hard from the fairway. In fact a couple of shots spun about 30 feet and back off the front of the green. The second wedge had vertical grooves and from the fairway the wedge seemed to be fairly standard with spin. Out of the rough I have never spun the ball that much before. The spin rate went up big time because more of the ball was now hitting the club face as the grass seemed to slip into the vertical grooves much better. Conclusion- the more ball on clubface and the rougher the face, the greater the spin rate!!

I’ve got an SM Vokey and just yesty hit the mates brand new CG-12’s and the simple fact is these new designs spin like hell. The Zip grooves on the Cleves are great and the sum of the parts on the SM are just awesome. I’m sure the Wishons and Eidolon’s are similar.

I’ve got a demo mirco, it may spin more but, there is no way those pcfs wedges are getting out of my bag, I love the look sole design, my fav clubs in my bag.

I’ve go the Eidolon’s in 48 bent to 50, 56 and 60 with PX shafts and the milled face. They put an immense amount of spin on the ball. I used to use CG10’s and although Cleveland wedges are arguably the best, I love the feel and spin I get from the Eidolon wedge. On greenside chips, the ball checks up beautifully..

I am a 15 handicapper looking to get some more spin out of my chipping at the moment, I get little to no spin and I tend to be a chip and roller. Which I am not bad at but I believe it is much easier to chip the ball at the pin and get it to check up rather than estimate the amount of roll I am going to get out of my pitch shots. My wedges are the standard ones that came with the set that I bought when I was a 24 handicap ( Maxfli Missile 48 Pitch 54 Sand).

BR>Do you think I would benefit more from a newer set of wedges or a lesson on chipping? A lesson would be a good start!!! Most people will gain some backspin just by changing setup and improving hand position through impact.
PGA PRO… very true mate. Being in control of your hands through impact with your wedge and ball position goes a long way. That little 30 yard pitch when you nip it perfect…you know it is going to rev. I also reckon, whats wrong with lobbing a 64 up in the air and landing it soft? Not having a go at you mate ok. Gotta love the soft lob with that club.
Just bomb it |

For sure Nige, it’s all about horses for courses. My course here has very hard sand in the bunkers and plenty of firm lies, i took the 54/10 Vokey out and put it thru it’s paces on many stock shots and it performed brilliantly. I’ve been judging pretty well when to use it and have been careful not to be allured by the impressive spin. If there’s plenty of green to work with on chips it just don’t come out of the bag. I do love it however when i nip a nice little pitch and it pulls up pronto in reasonable putting range.

I love my 60 deg. im sure its not the greatest wedge out there (costing me $70) but I find if im pitching I’ve gotta leave at least 40% of the distance to the pin for it to roll which sucks because i normally have to clear a greenside bunker/lil greenside pond and somehow stick the smallish greens at the home course. Guarantee you its my technique tho. Still need to get that coveted first lesson and find out how imperfect my perfect swing is :(
